A lot of you have followed my aviation writing for years, so I wanted to let you know: there are still some copies of The Hush-Kit Book of Warplanes available. And as it's you, I'll sign it. While stocks last: hushkit.net/product/the-...

The CAC Avon Sabre 🇦🇺🔥26% more thrust than the F-86F, 30% greater climb rate, mad acceleration and two 30mm ADEN cannon replacing six .50 cals. Add Sidewinders and four hardpoints. Australian Sabres were absolute beasts

Indeed. You’re thinking of the 30mm ADEN and first gen Harriers, I’m talking the 25mm and second gen

Afghan

@hushkit.bsky.socialOct 18, 2026, 8:16 PM

You’re talking about the earlier gun

@hushkit.bsky.socialOct 18, 2026, 8:15 PM

The 30mm was on first gen Harriers - the 25 was intended for the 5 onwards

@hushkit.bsky.socialOct 18, 2026, 8:14 PM

That was the earlier gun.

The UK spent years developing the Harrier’s ADEN 25mm cannon. It malfunctioned, shed parts, and threw ammo links at the aircraft. After thousands of rounds, they binned it in '99. 24 years of trying. That’s why British Harriers went to war without guns. 🇬🇧🤦‍♂️

“Ok, anyone else have any ideas?” Convair: “We do.” “Is it completely mental?” Convair <bashfully>: “Ermmm, would a Mach 4 attack hydro-ski seaplane count as mental?”

If you're crazy enough to follow me here but not the actual blog, you're missing out on the best stuff. You can sort that out now. The next article will dive deep into some long-held WWII fighter myths. Mind-blowing stuff.
I suppose I should give you the link: hushkit.net

It's #fossilfriday! Meet Cotylorhynchus, your sumo-shaped distant cousin from Permian Oklahoma and Texas! Huge body! Vegetarian habits! Teeny-tiny head!

Survival Verdict: MAYBE. You don't want to catch a bodyslam from this guy.

HOW TO SURVIVE PREHISTORY. Preorder now! bookshop.org/p/books/how-...

A very large, powerful, round Cotylorhynchus rests on a desert rock, whisps of steam emerging from its nostrils in the cold morning. Somehow its tiny head doesn't look quite as comedic as in other depitctions. Art by Stieven Van Der Poorten.
