Deep in our feels with these cards that Emory students made for CDC employees a few days ago. Sometimes things feel hopeless & that we’re all in our own private hell dealing with this fascism. It’s a nice reminder that we’re not & people care. Thanks Emory & thanks to all of you ❤️ Goodnight

Side eyeing HHS’s attempts to highlight sexual assault & domestic violence with their newest LinkedIn post while HHS Sec and the President have been credibly accused of sexual assault themselves.

There's so much cruelty, suffering, and indifference today. But I still believe that kindness matters. That decency is more common than cruelty. Maybe hope isn't believing everything will be okay? Maybe it's refusing to give up on the possibility that it could be. Sleep well. 😴

🧵3/ Research later confirmed HIV was circulating in the US years before Dugas was infected. "Patient zero" can imply blame and turn someone living with an infection into a scapegoat. Taylor knows a thing or two about the power of a narrative. This one has real victims. Words matter. 💙

@altcdc.altgov.infoOct 9, 2026, 12:00 AM

🧵2/ In the 1980s, Canadian flight attendant Gaëtan Dugas was labeled "Patient O" (for "Outside California") during an AIDS investigation. The O became a zero, and he was wrongly portrayed as the man who brought HIV to the US. He was vilified. And the story was false.

🧵1/ Yes, Taylor's "Patient Zero" has me singing along but... Did you know "patient zero" has a troubling connection to the early HIV/AIDS epidemic? It's a fascinating example of how language can fuel stigma, even when that's not the intention.

What's at stake for public health in the midterms?

Vaccines. Safe food. Healthcare access. Preparedness.

These aren't abstract debates. They affect our families and communities.

KFF has a resource to help voters understand the issues on the ballot. Check it out!

🧵 4/ Here's the really exciting part. WHO has set a goal of eliminating cervical cancer as a public health problem. And it's within reach! But we need to expand access to HPV vaccination, screening, and treatment worldwide. This is what investing in public health can accomplish. 💙

@altcdc.altgov.infoOct 8, 2026, 8:00 PM

🧵 3/ Much of this progress happened BEFORE HPV vaccines were widely available! Decades of screening, early detection, and treatment saved countless lives. Now we have vaccines that prevent most cervical cancers AND new tools like HPV self-sampling that make screening easier and more accessible.

@altcdc.altgov.infoOct 8, 2026, 8:00 PM

🧵2/ Nearly all cervical cancers are caused by persistent infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is incredibly common. Most infections clear on their own, but some persist and can eventually lead to cancer. The good news? It's largely preventable!

@altcdc.altgov.infoOct 8, 2026, 8:00 PM

🧵 1/ Some GOOD public health news! 🎉

A new study estimates that 1.3 MILLION cervical cancer deaths have been averted across 48 countries since their historical mortality peaks.

That's an extraordinary public health achievement.
