This is not a southern problem. Up north, incarcerated people make janitorial supplies like brooms, mops, & office supplies. Out west, they can meat and produce canned foods, work factory farms, and fight wildfires. In the flyover states, our children sit in desks and ride in buses made by prisoners

Having to work my full time job as an epidemiologist, run my nonprofit, finish these book edits, and care for myself and my mother while she is in her 8th day at the hospital has really been the most stress I have ever been under. I pray all this work produces good fruit. That it all matters to God.

The media always talks about "class war" or "race war" as if they're not already happening. This is an example of both. Making someone pay for their imprisonment is grinding the heel in the back of their neck, just to make sure they know their place.

We were at the Hayley Williams concert last night & it was sad that our section (which had a bunch of Black folks & some lit white girls) were GOING UP and thats it. Even Rico Nasty up there RAGING & the whole crowd was silent except us.

(2/2) These women cant strike, unionize, and have no RECOURSE for sexual or physical violence when FORCED to work. No breaks. No off days. No PPE alot of the time. No OSHA protections in that factory. They are slaves.

(1/2) This is the eternal debate about prison jobs and I include it in my book. The issue is not that ALL WORK behind bars is bad. Alot of these people will tell you it gives them a sense of purpose. BUT that cannot be separated from the exploitation and VIOLENCE used to produce this work.
