The opening trilogy of The Hybrid Helix will be free on Amazon from October 20-24 (image just shows covers for the three books, and says free on those dates). If you don't LOVE them I'll personally give you TWICE your money back.

My relationship with social media at the moment...

Between books at the moment. I finished Fellside by M.R. Carey last night, an interesting prison based story with a supernatural element that elevates it.

Morning Womble. I'm currently reading Red Rabbit by Alex Grecian, an intriguing weird western horror.

The debate has flared up again over whether chatbots are conscious. Which brings to mind this section of dialogue in my most recent book, This Machine Kills Billionaires (2026):

Excerpt reads as follows:

“Sergey Bookman says that’s speciesist. He’s been telling everyone who’ll listen which is everyone—that you’re alive.”
“Well he would say that, wouldn’t he?”
“Hmm. Why?”
“Who benefits from insisting that the toaster is sentient, Izzy? Why, the man with the toaster factory.” Huldo gestured at the space around them, the vista. “Even if I were a new form of life, Sergey Bookman would not care for me. Bookman does not care for any form of life, including human. His concerns are all instrumental.”

Morning Womble. I'm nearing the end of The Tapestry of Fate by Shannon Chakraborty. Hope you feel better soon.

20 or so years on from the first time I heard this talented band, I'm rediscovering my love for The Magic Numbers.

Another amazing cover from Joe Wilson for the final main volume in the Tyrant Philosophers series.

And all of the children who had no choice. So many young, innocent lives stolen by their parents' belief is unfathomable to me.

In Wales, the highest town in the south Wales valleys is called Brynmawr, which literally translates as big hill.

Finished this over the weekend 👌

I finished Exit Party by @emilymandel.bsky.social in two days over the weekend.

Mandel handles layered plots, nuance, and the liminal spaces like no other.

Morning Womble. I'm currently halfway through Exit Party by Emily St. John Mandel. Absolutely absorbing.

Few humanist authors are as well known as Salman Rushdie, who in 1989 was sentenced to death by a fatwa issued by Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini over his novel The Satanic Verses, and in 2022 was stabbed on stage at a lecture in New York. He is our patron, and one of our heroes. #Humanistbookshelf

‘Nobody has the right to not be offended...If you are offended it is your problem, and frankly lots of things offend lots of people. I can walk into a bookshop and point out a number of books that I find very unattractive in what they say. But it doesn't occur to me to burn the bookshop down. If you don't like a book, read another book. If you start reading a book and you decide you don't like it, nobody is telling you to finish it.’
