Trade wonk, Brexit bore, globalisation defender, music lover, cricketer, gardener, supporter of mediocre football teams, who knows where the time goes?

So many wonderful / mad events across the country, which we don't celebrate nearly enough.

@davidheniguk.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 12:45 PM

Football is becoming a useful medium to explain the modern world - patronage systems run by oligarchs, a few hugely wealthy clubs and a tail of millions of others, Europe losing influence - and @simonkuper.bsky.social is the ideal author to explain that. www.ft.com/content/8c0e...

@davidheniguk.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 10:48 AM

Now this is a nice story. Who says the UK doesn't have anything the Chinese want? www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

@davidheniguk.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 10:34 AM

There are elements here unique to France, and then there is wisdom applicable to the UK and elsewhere in Europe. With no easy pathways to sufficient growth, an ageing population, and rising debt costs, there is a squeeze on. And an awful lot of denial about this.

@davidheniguk.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 7:06 AM

Follow the methods of Trump that have horribly undermined the US except with a far less robust economy to start. But then since Reform and Conservatives both plan to put up barriers to 50% of our trade we know they both have no idea.

@davidheniguk.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 7:02 AM

Less 'plan' more the latest publicity seeking brain fart of someone who has already shown he has no understanding of the world whatsoever. Yeah, tariffs on Afghanistan, that'll show them, except there's barely any trade.

@davidheniguk.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 8:15 PM

Was not the fault of Brexit but of the world to be what the proponents wanted it to be, whatever that actually was.

@davidheniguk.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 6:03 PM

Did not find much to detain me in Warrington so thought I'd sample the beer at the ground

@davidheniguk.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 4:52 PM

In the end a decent game and a respectable two-all draw for my lot, Lancaster City, in Andy Burnham's back yard at Warrington

@davidheniguk.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 1:38 PM

For long time attendees at non league football games it remains a strange sensation to turn onto the road to the ground at 2.15 and see a few others doing the same. Long may it continue

@davidheniguk.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 11:12 AM

All right we can't all get to Malham

@davidheniguk.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 8:24 AM

Not the worst morning view, notwithstanding the rain on the window, yeah I know, in Liverpool two weeks after everyone else...

@davidheniguk.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 7:21 AM

So with the initial results in from the US, EU and China, and with apologies to @chadpbown.com and @soumayakeynes.ft.com it is interconnected world 3 trade wars 0. More analysis when it isn't a weekend but suffice to say this very much wasn't the predicted score...

@davidheniguk.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 2:34 PM

What is this "WTO" you mention?

@davidheniguk.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 1:56 PM

"The trade wars that weren't" as it turns out, following on from "the deglobalisation that wasn't". Not that the dangers are fully gone, but might be a good idea to learn from the last few years.

@davidheniguk.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 1:51 PM

All very well for the China hawks to put out papers demanding the EU takes fierce action, but there's no underlying strategy not least given a low tolerance for economic pain.

@davidheniguk.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 1:45 PM

As I predicted, the EU and China look to be finding a deal. Trade wars turn out to be too painful all round in today's economy.

@davidheniguk.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 12:44 PM

Where all of this leaves governments struggling for some semblance of economic control in today's world is harder to say, at the very least in need of new thinking as to strategy though.

@davidheniguk.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 12:42 PM

What I find particularly interesting is how quickly the returns from weaponising choke points in an inter connected world has diminished, much more so than I'd expected, and a lesson to an EU very much third in terms of being an economic power.

We have a fundamental difference of opinion about which is right side of the Pennines
