It's a better album than 'Stop Making Sense", though that's the one with all the plaudits.

Great title. I thought there'd be more Jamesian parody though

Very odd, almost aggressively inconsequential non-mystery. Late Innes prosaic elegance, but no "there" there.

This deserved better.

Oh really! Darwinistically?

As a survey contextualising a number of literary masterpieces (Eliot, Dickens, Trollope, Tennyson & others) in a fine-grained, fascinating account of the culture, history & world of Britain in the final year of the 1850s, it could not be bettered. Highly recommended.

Yesterday evening I attended an lovely book launch (remember when those were a thing?) for @gailmarshall.bsky.social 's superb "Britain in 1859": www.cambridge.org/core/books/b...

The initial-letter progression in this headline, A [B] C D E F [GHIJK] L, is very Carsonian. Chapeau.

USSR: We have named our secret services SMERSH, a portmanteau of "Smert shpionam", "Death to spies". This name will strike terror in the hearts of our enemies!

Well I'm not a writer who sells very much: my first ed hbk will be the only one, I may or may not get a pbk and frankly every sale counts (or my publisher cd drop me(

TELL EM ABOUT THE UNCANNY HONEY, HAUNTED MUMMY

... when you're gardening and also solving complicated mathematical puzzles?

@adamroberts.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 8:52 AM

I mean ...

Hilbert as a young man, unhatted. He has a prominent, mostly bald cranium.

First in a new series: great mathematicians and their even greater hats. Today: David Hilbert.

A photograph of German mathematician David Hilbert (1862 – 1943) at the age of 50. He is still quite boyish-faced, despite his goatee and moustache; prominent ears and a spectacles. Fully one half of the image is taken up with a tall soft-looking pale hat wide-brimmed, with a fat black band. A summer hat, one would think.
