Milne based the character on his son, Christopher Robin, and the boy's stuffed animals. The name "Winnie" came from a bear at the London Zoo, while "Pooh" was the name of a swan.

Lots of roots and dirt. I was curious, and here's what I found inside. 14x10 inches, finished with oil-based polyurethane.
