That should start to bring some green back to the hillsides! Sun comes back Tuesday and 90° by Friday so…

Most of the rain seems to be done from this storm. We got 24 times more! But our starting mark was pretty low (.09”). 22 hour total is 2.1” , a little over 50mm so a good amount. Definitely needed, and generally a light steady rain so no damage - here anyway. Average is .7” for October.

"How are we doing? Fuck you, that's how." 🪶

Three damp, miserable burrowing owls standing in the mud.

@watchinthesky.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 2:13 AM

I think they do

@watchinthesky.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 2:12 AM

A pretty good group 😉

The Mourning doves are looking after the squirrels by rocketing off the seed platform and blowing seeds onto the ground 😏

Thanks Rob!

@watchinthesky.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 12:44 AM

Thanks! I’m not sure the squirrels are fans

@watchinthesky.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 12:35 AM

Ha, we’ll see. It’s been many years since. I’ll let you know

@watchinthesky.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 12:30 AM

I don’t have any trees suitable for hanging feeders so probably no revs here for a while. I think the plastic plates are polypropylene so they are slippery which helps function.

@watchinthesky.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 12:25 AM

I guess I could see that happening, hmm. I thought that was the easy fill answer

@watchinthesky.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 12:22 AM

Ah, we mostly have Anna’s and Allen’s. No migrating. I wondered if the stress of migration made them feisty and conversely why ours were less feisty. Obviously not your scenario. I have lots (~14) of feeders up and spread out so if one or two is guarded, no big deal.

As I understand, the caterpillar digs into loose soil and turns into a hard chrysalis for transforming.

The SquirrelBlok could go above the food if feeder needs to hang from a tree. Might take rev 1.1 or 1.2 😁🤷‍♂️

@watchinthesky.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 12:09 AM

The feeders that have something of interest to the squirrels are hanging from Shepard’s hooks. Here is one of the SquirrelBlok 1.0 setups. A long shot but it’s actually raining!!!! They work well, I haven’t had to go past rev 1.0 (yet, I hope I haven’t jinxed it 😰)

A photo of a 12 inch by 12 inch plate of slick plastic is placed on a pole that is used to hang bird feeders to keep squirrels from climbing up and eating the bird food.

Ah ha! That would be easier

@watchinthesky.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 11:46 PM

“open ends”? Ah, a photo of that sometime would be appreciated

@watchinthesky.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 11:44 PM

Yes, I imagine mittens might slow down the process 😁 It would need to be protected by a SquirrelBlok1.0 because 🐿️
