I really wish more people realize the conservative crackdown taking place at public universities affects way, way more people than the overstated and overdramatized issues at the Ivies.

Things aren't going great down here, y'all.

FWIW my wife and I also grew up this way. My mom put on a lot of Universal Monster VHS tapes when I was little and King Kong was one of my favorite movies at six or seven, alongside the then-more-contemporary Ghostbusters and Indiana Jones.

“Kids today don’t have the attention span for long movies.” My daughter watched The Sound of Music when she was four years old. She had a tantrum when it was over because she was so upset the film ended after three hours rather than showing what happened when they got to Switzerland.

I show my 7 and 5 year olds classic movies and they love them. Their favorite cartoons are Disney shorts from the 30s-50s, my daughter loves Signin’ in the Rain and The Sound of Music. Our Christmas rotation includes Meet Me in Saint Louis. The slower pace is also developmentally appropriate.

One thing that can trip folks up reading aloud is that kids love repeating stories but adults seek novelty. But the answer to this is just to put more energy into your performance! The way to make it more entertaining for you (and them) is to do voices, vary your delivery, try new things.

Anyone who sells you a tool that promises to outsource the work of your relationships, or the loving tasks of connecting to our friends and family, is someone who is trying to rob you of your own humanity. For god's sake. Say no to this. Say no to all of it.

Reading to children isn't a "sometimes" activity. It's every day. It's multiple times a day. It is a fundamental task of parenting. The fact that there is not one, but apparently many tech buffoons trying to wriggle their way out of this basic responsibility is frankly enraging. Their poor kids.

Human beings process information through narrative, through story. We think in stories, remember in stories, plan for the future in stories, worry in stories, dream in stories and connect with one another through stories. When we read to children we embody our deeply human birthright as storytellers

We read to our children not only to imprint on them the value of literacy - which still can't come from a voice recording, because the child cannot observe a recording's eyes scanning the text or unpacking the hidden clues in the illustrations. We read to them for something even more important.

THIS. And 99% of the time, the kid is not passively listening. They stop to ask questions. They make jokes. They share their own thoughts. It's a conversation, not a recitation.

It just boggles my mind that an American state has been in North Korean missile range since the late 90s, with very public reminders, and no one treats it like a big deal except that increasing missile range might “threaten the US mainland.” Great, awesome. We’re definitely not treated as a colony.

CALIFORNIA: Can’t believe people are casually talking about us hypothetically getting nuked by Iran. So upsetting. HAWAII: … CA: It’s like, crazy right? Can you imagine Americans not caring if you’re nuked? HI: [checks phone, turns off erroneous North Korean missile alert] CA: Wild brah. Wild.

I did a couple years volunteering at a charity haunted house as a teenager and this is SPOT ON.

I wish people understood that TV writers: 1. *Have* actually thought more about this than even the most die hard fan. 2. Are beholden to time, money, and owner constraints that fans will never be aware of. 3. Are extremely likely to already be aware of any critiques because (see 1) but (see 2)
