'bridge in the rain (after hiroshige) by vincent van gogh 1887. oil on canvas.
van gogh loved japanese art. he particularly admired utagawa hiroshige. this painting is his version of hiroshige's 'sudden shower over shin-ohashi bridge and atake' a colour woodblock done in 1857. the painting depicts a slightly arched bridge over water with several figures under umbrellas hurrying over the bridge. in the water is a long, narrow boat being paddled by one person. around the outside of the painting is a colourful border with many japanese characters written on it.
