Even worse for you, but at least you can leave. I have American citizenship. Sigh.

"will words blossom in my throat
to write a new anthem
for my country"

I earmarked so many poems in Zeina Azzam's SOME THINGS NEVER LEAVE YOU [these poems won't either I promise] (Tiger Bark Press, 2023)!
✨💖✨

#poetry 📚💙

The book resting on crossed legs: the cover features collaged patterns of subdued reds, dark blues, and whites, some star patterns and stitch patterns are recognizable. The art is by Samar Hussaini, "Narrative of Belonging," 2020, acrylic paint, ink, charcoal, image transfer, and thread on canvas. In My Small Sky
(A poem inspired by a painting of Egyptian feminist and artist Inji Efflatoun, titled "Dreams of the Detainee")

[the poem is in left/right alternating blocks of text]

If I reach outside these bars
will my arm find freedom
will my palm pretend-float
on my breath
like a lark, a wave
in my small sky

If I think deeply about you
in your cell
will our visions
of open chains interweave
will two threads mesh as
a coiling helix, an embrace

If I chew this stale bread
long enough, will its taste conjure
the wheat fields and farmers
in my village, bending sunward
from rising to setting
guided by toil and light

If I pull the pins from my hair
will that feeling of lightness
cascade down my back
wash over me like a waterfall
clear, unfettered
escaping the riverIf I gaze hard at the faraway wall
will my eyes re-learn how to focus
beyond the bars, strain
to see more than dirt, stains,
rats, gray water, a scab
remember a generous cloud

If I turn away from my jailer
will jasmine from my garden visit me
will I plant it behind my ear
will words blossom in my throat
to write a new anthem
for my country

I live in the USA, they really don’t grasp it especially those in government.

From the same AI heavy documentary (currently on British TV screens), here's

the emperor Hadrian arriving in London AD 122

We really don't know where to start with this... 😱

The emperor Hadrian or Alexander the Great or Attlia the Hun or Vlad the impaler or Gengis Khan (or anyone really) in weird sci-fi armour on horseback surrounded by comedy Trojans / Romans

question for brooks: what if they are, literally, nazis?

Ddriftglass@driftglass.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 3:59 AM

"Jon Ossoff, my advice to him is, if you start calling your political opponents Nazis, maybe it's time to shut up. That's just not what we do here in this country." -- David Brooks, this evening. Remember, Brooks still gets very handsomely rewarded by the fossilized media for saying shit like this

Not suspicious--just par for the course. We're just on our own. People will talk about protests in France, etc but Indian protests are just not even registering for them.

I hate it when US officials refer to warfare, includng the deaths of thousands of noncombatants, as "kinetic engagement." Euphemism is the weapon of charlatans.

AAaron Rupar@atrupar.comOct 11, 2026, 1:18 PM

Bessent: "As the president has said, he doesn't expect kinetic engagement until at least after the midterms"

Twice he's asked about the risk of creating a martyr. Twice his answer is "no one has to watch it." Which is, obviously, not remotely an answer to the question.

AAaron Rupar@atrupar.comOct 11, 2026, 2:43 PM

BRENNAN: Nidal Hasan is in a wheelchair. Doesn't the administration risk livestreaming this and making him a martyr? Couldn't this be a risk to the homeland? MARKWAYNE MULLIN: No one has to watch it B: Well then why are you livestreaming it? MULLIN: The president is restoring American values

Bonkers that this is happening in the bluer parts of the state, what are Democrats doing up there? Also, what happened to the environmental wing of the Democratic Party? I live one county over and this is so infuriating.

"You're a NIMBY about AI data centers!" Actually I'm a NOMP (Not On My Planet) about privately-owned fixed-location infrastructure externalizing the cost of burning hydrocarbons for energy. If they had to pay what this really costs society in health and climate harms, they wouldn't do it.

Please check a reliable source re urban wildlife. If you see, for example, a "baby" opossum and think it has been abandoned, just know that unless it is really tiny--less than 7 or 8 inches long-- the baby is old enough to forage by itself and no intervention is needed.
