Good question design gives you leveling signal - even an intern should be able to answer it and think “oh yeah that was easy I did a good job” but their answer looks different from an entry level FTE (or senior or staff etc)

95% of my job as an interviewer is getting candidates out of their head to do the thing they obviously know how to do and “I couldn’t get a signal because candidate was having a doom loop” is absolutely qualitatively different from “got strong signal candidate is clueless”

Even with pair programming and AI assist available, and a mostly working starter implementation that just needs a couple fixes.

Actually had to split out coding round from a single 2hr round into two 1hr rounds because the percentage of candidates who can answer every theory and algorithms question and every software engineering practice question fine but can’t code for beans is soooooo high

Honestly that’s my biggest gripe about AI is I can’t just give candidates a week to do a nominally 2 hour task off screen without pressure of talking to me.

The thing is pre-AI you could make “can you fizzbuzz” tests that weren’t actually Googleable as such and do them as a take home with 1 week timer and the filtering power was basically the same, and then save the (role-relevant) DSA type stuff for no-code conceptual discussions.
