Monday ice update - #Arctic sea ice extent is currently the 12th lowest on record (JAXA data)
• about 230,000 km² above the 2010s mean
• about 1,070,000 km² below the 2000s mean
• about 2,160,000 km² below the 1990s mean
• about 2,740,000 km² below the 1980s mean
Last month was 2nd warmest September on record globally. This was about 1.63°C warmer than a pre-industrial (1850-1900) average. The last 12 months have been about 1.50°C above that same baseline.

Outside of the #Antarctic, temperatures have been above average for nearly all areas of our planet in the last three months. This is clear when looking at each latitude band.

Yes I am. My initial post in showing NOAAGlobalTemp v6.1.0, provided by NCEI: www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/monit...
My Arctic temperature graphics have been updated through September 2026: zacklabe.com/arctic-tempe...
There was a sharp contrast in departures last month between Greenland (much colder) and western Siberia (much warmer).
This is the standard baseline used by NOAA NCEI, who produces the dataset, and so it’s intended to be consistent with their data interpretation.
My website contains plenty of shareable graphics that show 1850-1900 baselines, which I update monthly with the latest data: zacklabe.com/climate-chan...
The average global temperature so far this year (for the January-September period) is the 2nd warmest on record since the start of this dataset...

Last month was the hottest September ever recorded in the contiguous U.S.—a sobering record for an already historically hot year.
Friday ice update - #Arctic sea ice extent is currently the 16th lowest on record (JAXA data)
• about 420,000 km² above the 2010s mean
• about 860,000 km² below the 2000s mean
• about 1,960,000 km² below the 1990s mean
• about 2,610,000 km² below the 1980s mean
AI-based approaches are showing promise as robust options for predicting sea ice conditions. But the polar observations needed to build and test these systems remain sparse, write @zacklabe.com @climatecentral.org and colleagues from a @scor-int.bsky.social working group. eos.org/science-upda...
Yep exactly! I had no idea the extent to which is this a public health hazard due to rising sodium levels in our drinking water too.
I enjoyed the opportunity to share how winters are changing across the Northeast at the New York State Salt Summit this week! My talk explored how warming temperatures are changing winter hazards, alongside discussions about safety and the impacts of road salt on freshwater and public health.
Not quite sure what the final peak will be yet!
Yikes!!
Yes, this data is correct. This mean state SST seasonality is mostly due to the movement of the Intertropical Convergence Zone during summer, which is linked to a shift in the tropical circulation that results in an increase in equatorial upwelling in this region (e.g., the cold tongue).
