I ♥️ traffic.

Wow a video about the birth of the "Stop de Kindermoord" (Stop the child murder) group. I had seen short excerpts of this, but never the entire video!

Automatic translation of the Dutch captions is just about good enough to get the general story here, I think.

Rotterdam in 1973. A report about the city's first speed bumps. The traffic looks so different from today!

Turn on translation of the automatic captions to get an idea of what is said.

Halvemaansteeg, Amsterdam in 1979 and today. Today, a cycle only street crossing a tram only street.

Top, 1979, black and white: a busy road junction with a taxi in the foreground, a van and other cars queued behind it, and a cyclist among pedestrians crossing on the left. A "Politie" police station sits on the corner.

Bottom, today, in colour: the same junction, now a cycle street with no cars. A man and a young girl cycle away from the camera past bollards and traffic cones, with people walking and pulling suitcases on the paths either side.

Next time you hear someone say "This isn't (insert great cycling city)" Just hit em with "You're right! Better get started so we can catch up!"

Correct!

Mrs. Fietser knocked out the grocery run by bike on her lunch hour today. Driving a car just to haul a few bags of food through the neighborhood is incredibly inefficient. A car is simply too big of a tool for the job.

Cycling the new F12 from Woerden to Utrecht, all 18 kilometres of it. A real-time ride along the new route in this week’s BicycleDutch video.

‘Ohh wow. They look like designated cycle lanes separate to the roads?’

Notes from Utrecht.

Take a look at the bike traffic near Blackfriars Bridge in London during the evening rush hour. Incredible!

I want to take a moment to let people know that this is not super new tech. It has existed for years, but more notably in countries that design urban infrastructure to enable people of all ages and abilities, not just the car drivers.

Ginnekenmarkt, Breda in 1974 and today

The top image shows a cobbled square packed with parked cars on all sides, including a Mercedes, a Fiat 500 and a Ford, surrounded by metal railings. Patches of cobbles have been dug up around a central stone water pump. Today the same square, now a packed café terrace. Rows of wicker chairs and tables fill the space where the cars once stood, with people eating and drinking under large furled umbrellas. Mature trees with golden autumn leaves shade the square, and the same stone water pump still stands at the centre.

Across the globe, people increasingly say social media is harming democracy. In rich countries this opinion is more common than in poor countries. Source: buff.ly/Hg2ArGl

London is a cycling city. And this was a relatively small number of cyclists at just one intersection compared with others I've seen.
