Harry Webb was cycling home when he was killed by a driver using nitrous oxide.

His tragic death shows the devastating consequences of people taking drugs & driving.

I hope that the seriousness of this judgement will deter other offenders in the future.

I am not going to share that disgusting cartoon that was in the Daily Telegraph. Suffice to say that it was disgusting and deeply offensive.

Here is Jewish and Muslim Greens' joint statement on the matter, and a call to the DT to withdraw it - jewishgreens.greenparty.org.uk/2026/10/11/j...

In cities driving above the speed limit can be lethal to people not inside cars - see what happened to Harry Webbe in original post. And don’t tell me you think everyone should be in a car as that is a recipe for gridlock and a very unpleasant city.

@carolinerussell.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 5:48 PM

Very good question?

@carolinerussell.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 11:18 AM

Indeed. The politics are grim so perhaps having an example will help concentrate minds?

We are currently looking at regulation of Dockless hire bikes in Transport Committee and I’m struck by the wide consensus about reducing harm through regulation of speeds and ensuring compliance via tech when it comes to hire bikes. Imagining the same applied to vehicles.

@carolinerussell.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 8:49 AM

Thinking about Harry Webbe’s family and friends as they process this latest post-crash news.

Geofencing and speed-limiting hired e-bikes is widely accepted, tech is developing fast, so should we apply the same danger reduction logic to driving cars?

Their failure to respond to your devastating email shows their lack of care, empathy and human connection and that is utterly staggering.

Your regular reminder that my daughter Alice’s death wasn’t counted in Appleby’s report, despite her meeting all the criteria. And when I emailed the Tavistock adult GIC to inform them they could take Alice off the waitlist, because she’d died by suicide, they never replied. It’s a disgrace.

Managed to get the #BBC to admit that it made a serious error in its reporting about trans healthcare, when in *two separate articles*, it misquoted NWJCC to claim patients of the Welsh Gender Service were referred inappropriately.

The key is lots of dockless parking bays in the road.

@slothlydad.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 7:43 AMReposted by @carolinerussell.bsky.social

The main thing is nuance around controlled vs uncontrolled parking areas. A woman in zone 4/5 should be able to pick up a bike from a dedicated area by the station at 11pm, cycle it a mile home, and park next to where she lives as long as it's considerate. And the same in reverse in the morning.

I wonder whether London is moving towards Dutch levels of cycling (👏) but without building Dutch levels of parking infrastructure. If we want to future proof share bikes/cycling in the daily life of Londoners, the key is secure bike parking. Lots of it.

@carolinerussell.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 7:40 AM

Exactly. The parking is probably the most crucial issue to solve.

📢 Assembly Transport Committee looking at regulation of Dockless bikes this morning. We’ll be coming up with recommendations to TfL for how to regulate dockless bikes when they get their new powers so they work for London and all Londoners. Listen in from 10:00. 🔗 in post👇

RIP to Margaret Hamilton, the engineer who led the 100-person team that wrote the software for the Apollo missions. An absolute icon. Fun fact: She started college at the University of Michigan (my alma mater! Though she transferred elsewhere).

Black and white photo of Margaret Hamilton standing next to a literal stack of code she and her team wrote for the space program. It's as tall as she is.

Very much looking forward to chairing tomorrow's Transport Committee meeting and hoping we pick up some good practice and great ideas for our recommendations to TfL for the use of their newly devolved regulatory powers.

Three years on, we remember the horrific events of October 7 and the wave of destruction in Gaza that has followed it. We call today, and every day, for an end to the violence, for peace and safety for all.
