Hi #EduSky - late to my #Saturday3 this week because, well, it's lovely weather where I am and I have enjoyed being out most of the day. The big education story this week is Burnham's proposals for technical education but I don't feel qualified enough to evaluate blogs on that so...

I feel that you really took on board my feedback that the episodes with guests are better when there is some disagreement! 🤣

Although it’s from the US, I wonder if it might be of interest to @knowledge-hub.bsky.social because we have exactly the same concept to teach in Yr 4 maths here!

It’s third grade teacher Samantha Lippert explaining how she uses an atomisation approach to break it down into sub-skills and build conceptual understanding. Full details in her original post here.

I feel like I am always sharing literacy stuff on here to the neglect of primary maths. To redress the balance, this is great post / video from @hollykorbey.bsky.social on teaching rounding for the nearest 10 and 100 (a topic much beloved of Yr 4 teachers).

That’s great to see!

This on @thestorygraph.com made me laugh. Couldn’t have managed it if I had tried.

Chart showing progress towards reading goals. 73 out of 75 books and, more amusingly, 24999 or 25000 pages.

Excellent article by Timothy Shanahan on teaching readers with grade-level texts. I don’t agree with every word but there is lots of good advice here. (H/t @alexjquigley.bsky.social ).

People are having issues with my selections this week! I worry quite a bit about the accuracy of SATs reading assessments and this chimed a lot with previous examples denying marks to answers which seemed fine to me.

@markgoodrich.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 12:13 PM

Very selective quoting, I am afraid. As the article goes on to say immediately afterwards, this was an initial hypothesis that they themselves were unsure about. To make this tentative ordering done for a very different purpose into a pyramidal hierarchy seems a major misstep to me.

@markgoodrich.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 9:59 AM

I wouldn’t put them in any sequence and neither did Bloom! It was a method of typology for exam questions and IMV shouldn’t be used as the basis for designing lessons (which is how schools usually present the made-up pyramid).

@markgoodrich.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 8:03 AM

Because it suggests a hierarchy which isn’t what Bloom was saying.

Thanks to @rlrossi64.bsky.social for posting that last one so I noticed it! I am always grateful to see what others are reading and finding interesting.

Finally, something completely different - concerns about the marking of reading SATs, eloquently expressed
@oldprimaryhead.bsky.social.

Next up, I can’t be the only person who gets annoyed by the common presentation of Bloom’s Taxonomy in a pyramid. Here’s the takedown of that you need to push back against it by @carlhendrick.substack.com.

Found this absolutely fascinating and it has caused me to rethink something I am writing. He makes a strong case for the interrelationship of oral language and decoding and against practices which artificially divide them.

Anyway, first up is an absolute must-read from Mark Seidenberg, phonics expert, with a critique of “The Simple View of Reading” and its application in the SoR movement in the US.

Hi #EduSky and apologies again for being a day late again with my #Saturday3 with yesterday being crazily busy. Normal service should be resumed next week after I have changed time zones…

@markgoodrich.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 6:55 AM

Yes - have been enjoying these a lot!

@markgoodrich.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 9:27 PM

This is true and it’s weird that most rugby fans can’t see it.

@markgoodrich.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 7:12 PM

Fun game, this. My nomination would be The Murderer’s Ape by Jacob Wegelius. Goes through so many phases and different settings.
