I am absolutely gobsmacked. And trying not to pass out from hyperventilating. Thank you @barackobama.bsky.social — you just made my secret dream for DATA EMPIRE, spoken aloud to NO ONE, come true.

Unlike fave teen, I won’t point out where I think the writing could be better! Though it’s helpful if I ever do this again.

Happily

There’s way too much loss right now, both for me and people I love. September is fired. 💔

My favorite teen did this for me with my book for my birthday and it was amazing

Saturday: all the grading I could not do all week, for reasons.

Turn the radio up for that sweet sound.

Gimmie an Arduino, a heat sensor, an impact sensor and an mp3 of the Wilhelm scream and I will give you any arbitrary thing that can "act like" it feels pain. A stuffed toy, a bookshelf, a sock...

At a work breakfast today, I was disputed when I explained that I am not warm and cuddly by nature and therefore have to consciously remind myself to attend to people’s feelings as a manager. Tell it to my bestie, a hugger, who says she knows I think she is in a bad way when I hug her unprompted.

And wrapping up chapter 2, I’m in a footnote! That’s it for tonight because this week has been the longest year of my life. More soon.

💯 “It is not enough to challenge the embedded pedagogies of neutrality at work in higher education. We must match our grassroots pedagogical value systems with efforts to change the very economies of academic labor and value at work at the university.” Be still, my beating heart.

@roopikarisam.bsky.socialSep 26, 2026, 2:28 AM

I’ve never thought about learning objectives in the context of values before but OF COURSE. I’m going to try this when talking to people about the AI & teaching problem.

Thank you, BW, for reframing the old canard: “A more useful reframing for a pedagogy that aims towards institutional change would be, ‘What should DH be for us?’”

@roopikarisam.bsky.socialSep 26, 2026, 2:23 AM

Also digging the recent history of Scholars’ Lab that’s coming through here.

@roopikarisam.bsky.socialSep 26, 2026, 2:21 AM

Bonus points for use of computational analysis to make this argument.

@roopikarisam.bsky.socialSep 26, 2026, 2:20 AM

There is an excellent example of how to do a community norms type exercise with students, which I will borrow because mine works fine but this is so much better.

@roopikarisam.bsky.socialSep 26, 2026, 2:19 AM

Brilliant: “Perhaps, more than any digital project, values can endure; they can live on beyond a single team and inspire work to come. 🥹

@roopikarisam.bsky.socialSep 26, 2026, 2:17 AM

Wait, there is hope! “The traditions of management and project design that facilitate DH work can be adapted to bring about the communities of learning that we want to see.”

@roopikarisam.bsky.socialSep 26, 2026, 2:17 AM

*cries in ‘neutral’ university professor*… “It can feel difficult to work as a committed individual in an institution that asserts pedagogical neutrality”
