Great to see Timothy Neal with his fabulous new book “How to Control Fire on A Burning Continent” at #4S2026 where there was a big panel on the book. @4sweb.bsky.social @dukepress.bsky.social

After years of championing "free speech," Texas lawmakers have enabled a dramatic rise of censorship in Texas universities, banning concepts, canceling courses and closing departments seen as "woke," and even using AI bots as censors. All in the name of freedom. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...

In other professors’ syllabi, the bot flagged the Pulitzer Prize–winning play Angels in America by Tony Kushner, essays by the Mexican American MacArthur genius grant recipient Sandra Cisneros, and materials related to a class about the Holocaust (that professor was told to drop material regarding Nazi persecution of LGBTQ people).

Putting aside the ideological slant of the new rules, the bot, like many large language models, seems to “hallucinate,” or make mistakes. The AAUP lawsuit lists texts banned for their “sex-based ecofeminist framework” and “gendered ecofeminist frameworks.” These phrases might sound persuasively like academese, but the academics behind the lawsuit had never heard of them; these concepts “do not exist,” the complaint says. Matthew Pehl, a history professor at Tech, told me that he knew several people who’d received reports from the system that were “plainly written by an AI that had hallucinated content or confused content from one class to another.”

You mean there used to be a wife around who actually sent out invitations, cleaned house, arranged for child care, cooked the food, set the table, and elegantly shoo'd out the guests who wouldn't leave... It didn't all happen by itself?

Both/and. Neither/nor. Always changing. The narrative, including the must insane, garners publicity and serves the IPO.

I just learned at 4S that some journals have had to set limits on submissions--no more than 2 per author a month--because authors are using AI to churn out article after article. One journal went from less than 600 submissions a year to 2000+... you can't find that many reviewers!

Yes! It's not an agreement, is it, if the Dems abide by it but the GOP doesn't? It's like "working across the aisle" or "two sideism" or anything else. If one side is committed to moderation and the other is committed to domination, the moderate will lose over and over and over. Enough!

Somebody was asking me tonight: Why can't Dems ever get their act together? Me (approx): Yes, sure. But can you remember a stronger slate than Dems are putting up in big races right now? Cooper? Ossoff + Bottoms? Talarico + Hinojosa? Turek + Sand? Benson + El-Sayed? Brown + Acton? Hamilton? Etc

Front cover text:
"WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN AMERICA HAS A DICTATOR?
IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE
A Novel by
SINCLAIR LEWIS"

Background includes an image of a red fasces with a green olive branch.

Back cover text:
"'Vulgar, almost illiterate, a public liar easily detected… He was an actor of genius'

A vain, outlandish, anti-immigrant, fear-mongering demagogue runs for President of the United States – and wins. Sinclair Lewis's chilling 1935 bestseller is the story of Buzz Windrip, who promises poor, angry voters that he will make America proud and prosperous once more, but takes the country down a far darker path. As the new regime slides into authoritarianism, newspaper editor Doremus Jessop can't believe it will last – but is he right? This cautionary tale of liberal complacency in the face of populist tyranny shows it really can happen here."

On our book tour for "Faculties" (coming Nov, @dukepress.bsky.social) we're often asked "what's working?" Today I learned ab @cuny.edu Segal Center Initiative: rich array of public art events staged across all five NYC boroughs. Coordination, collaboration, community, creativity. What a gift!

Nobel Laureate Anne Carson, with one of my all-time favorite opening lines and one of my all-time favorite closing lines.

O Small Sad Ecstasy of Love

Anne Carson

I like being with you all night with closed eyes.
What luck—here you are
coming
along the stars!
I did a road trip
all over my mind and heart
and
there you were
kneeling by the roadside
with your little toolkit
fixing something.

Give me a world, you have taken the world I was.

And will the programmed AI voice also get to experience the sheer joy of fatherhood, of experiencing the light that comes in a child's eyes when a parent reads out loud to him? I guess in AI world, joy is optional.

Anne Carson, the Canadian author of the amazing unfolding poem in a box, NOX, has won the Nobel Prize in Literature. When informed of the prize, she was in Iceland "listening to the wind." There is still a place in this sorry world for wonder.

It was a short call, Carlberg said: All the poet would say was she
was "in Iceland," where she was
"listening to the wind."

In America our taxes pay for wars and tax breaks for trillionaires. And grift all the way down. No free sandwiches.

Have a great one, Tressie. You are always brilliant and your recent insta post on what we count as “intelligence” was, well, genius. I write as a failed waitress with a lot of books. Writing books is far easier cognitively. Thank you.
