When you know, you know.
I highly appreciate this directed graph showing which language is used to indicate incomprehensibility in different languages (eg, “it’s Greek to me”)
Look it doesn’t always work, however, if you can do more press ups than that other guy,,,
Which is not meant to imply “boys will be boys.” I just notice the active effort necessary to prevent him from doing stupid things.
I know it’s some kind of trope that parents become gender-essentialists once they have a son & a daughter, but man, my 4yo boy does require a lot more civilizing reinforcement to learn basic rules than his sister. And that’s not even taking into account that he’s constantly trying to craft weapons.

well, we used to. nowadays the more politically correct term Syphilis is preferred.
hahahahaha
Certain flavours of geography are SO bad for doing things like this. “As I explored this neighbourhood, with its fascinating interplay of lives (Jacobs, 1961) I happened upon a prison (Foucault, 1975) …”
The turkey 🦃, also known as the syphilis of birds.
Joe 😂😭
That seems a perfectly reasonable use case! I’d definitely accept a Bronfenbrenner citation in response to somebody who claims “research so far has not considered how the family may influence developmental outcomes” 😂
Will 😂😂😂😭😭😭
I think using it to get students to think about various things that could matter for any outcome is absolutely fine! That puts it more in the context of discovery rather than in the context of justification — the latter, I’m afraid, would require engaging with Bronfenbrenner’s ideas in more detail 😂
I always called it ceremonial citation but 'ritual throat-clearing' works too
Think “Fairness is important (Rawls, 1971).”
Is there a name for citations that only fulfill the function of placing your work in some venerable intellectual tradition? Citing Bronfenbrenner is a big one in psych, but Aristotle also makes appearances, and one time I saw Rawls cited in that manner, which I found particularly offensive.
Lots of academics seem confused about the difference between a heuristic and a model.
(Not a statement on Bronfenbrenner’s actual work of course, which I haven’t read — and which I’m pretty sure most people who cite him haven’t either, given they don’t relay anything insightful on that matter)
