But the issue of producing more oil in the US is a controversial one, with partisan battles over the role of government in using laws to curb greenhouse gas emissions and wean Americans off fossil fuels in the face of the climate crisis.

And: to stay in power, dictators have to shatter the very concept of human solidarity, to break bonds that might enable the country to rise up against the regime. Turning ppl against one another to dissolve trust is just Step 1. Step 2: desensitize ppl so they no longer recognize shared humanity.
