Fellow Waltheads, where you at?

@petersagal.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 9:16 PM

And thanks as well to those who suggested the Interurban Trail for a run. Gorgeous.

Bellingham! Thank you so much for coming out to see me, especially this family who made these shirts for the Seattle WW show I had to miss because of COVID. They drove up for a second chance.

I’m such a big fan of Glen’s, for this and many other reasons (#1: “The Snapture”)

@petersagal.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 6:36 PM

Thank you…. I appreciate the correction.

That’s it. That’s all. She never claimed Cherokee ancestry to get a job or a grant or in any official document or bio. Some recipes for a cookbook put out by a small museum. And 14 years later these guys are still snickering about it.

@petersagal.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 1:55 PM

Brown had run as independent minded guy but he voted with his party and Warren was crushing him. They had nothing. So somebody found that in 1984 Warren had submitted some recipes to a cookbook that she had been told came from her Cherokee ancestors. www.bostonherald.com/2012/05/17/p...

This particular slur/insult/trope makes me nuts. In 2012 Warren was running against incumbent GOP Senator Scott Brown, who has won a special election for Ted Kennedy’s seat in 2010 in the Obamacare backlash (also bad Dem candidate and being a former nude model.)

@petersagal.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 1:02 PM

But did you win?

@petersagal.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 1:01 PM

No, but thank you for the pointer!

@petersagal.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 1:01 PM

Not right now… issue is age. That is, I’m too old and the kids are too young.

@petersagal.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 1:01 PM

Thank you for coming out!

The right wing crash out over asian students celebrating at a UT football game reveals that all along the true goal of reactionary colorblindness was never “meritocracy” but resegregation. (Gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...

Color-blind meritocracy was, for many years, a successful rhetorical strategy for undermining antidiscrimination law and excluding Black people from selective schools and prominent positions. That’s why so many former segregationists seemed to suddenly embrace the concept in the 1970s. For them, resegregation—not color-blindness—was always the goal. As long as the success of some immigrants could be used to paint Black students as undeserving, color-blind meritocracy was good. But now many on the right see a new problem: too many Asian Americans in elite spaces. Their success, therefore, must be portrayed as a sinister theft of real (white) Americans’ birthright.

The declining “social trust” that the administration warned against is, of course, not the fault of these students. The problem is bigots like Bo French who cannot accept into their community people who do not share their race and religion, and those who monetize or otherwise profit from that bigotry by spreading it through social media. Like the proverbial child who kills their parents and asks for mercy as an orphan, they are responsible for the problem they are decrying.

Thank you! Are you out there or nearby?

@petersagal.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 3:45 PM

Is this a more subtle “play Freebird” joke?

Friends, I’ve got like six free hours in Bellingham WA over today and tomorrow. Where should I run? Eat? What should I see? And if you’re coming to see me tonight at the Mt Baker Theater… what would you Iike to hear? (I have a talk! I just like to pander.)

Kavanaugh’s majority opinion clearly establishes how the prosecutor continually and illegally excluded Black people from juries so he could put Flowers to death. Thomas’s dissent starts with the brutality of the crimes that Flowers was accused of, as if somehow that makes it okay.

@petersagal.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 12:52 PM

The Flowers case also resulted in one of the only really good (IMHO) SCOTUS opinions written by Brett Kavanaugh, with a disturbing dissent by Clarence Thomas.
