The Syrian Network for Human Rights documented a significantly higher death toll, reporting hundreds of civilian victims. Ali Kayali, also known as Mihrac Ural, a militia leader loyal to Bashar al-Assad, has long been accused of playing a leading role in the atrocities.

According to Human Rights Watch, at least 248 people were killed in the two locations, including women and children. Many victims were reportedly summarily executed after the fighting had ended, and entire families were wiped out.

The Baniyas Massacre took place on May 2–3, 2013, when Syrian government forces and pro-government militias killed hundreds of civilians in the coastal town of Baniyas and the nearby village of al-Bayda.
