NEW: Meet the private-equity firm -- and its billionaire immigrant CEO -- making millions off some of ICE's cruelest deportation flights.

After a five-month investigation, my story for @motherjones.com:

Harris County TX. He's hospitalized:

"ICE claimed the man ran in front of the agents' vehicle and was struck.

However, the surveillance video appears to show the SUV veering left through empty parking spaces before running the man over..."

Recently met our incoming county councilor--a Salvadoran immigrant himself--and he said as he's been door-knocking, he keeps hearing from voters how eerily quiet the streets are. Kids are not out playing. I said, "Yes, we have a thousand Anne Franks, just in our county alone."

There's just this constant: "You must pretend that you are at a ladies' tea party even in the midst of a massacre, which is by the way your fault because you're not tea partying with enough daintiness and reserve. Doilies shall be thy only weapon against cannons." Fuck that. And hooray for Ossoff.

Got asked this all over again in February, replied: We are facing such horrific brutality. Politeness is not really the problem. I think we got into this situation in part by a lot of people in the mainstream thinking it was more important to be polite than to call things by their true names.

Years ago I wrote this essay, and the clamor for compromise and one-sided pandering marches on, and of course David Brooks is a standard-bearer in the parade. As Jamelle Bouie notes, what if they are Nazis?

"Jon Ossoff, my advice to him is, if you start calling your political opponents Nazis, maybe it's time to shut up. That's just not what we do here in this country." -- David Brooks, this evening. Remember, Brooks still gets very handsomely rewarded by the fossilized media for saying shit like this

David Brooks is a proven liar and a cheater who has never run for elected office. Jon Ossoff is running for reelection in the purplest of states. He does not need anyone’s advice, least of all from a reactionary centrist who paved the road to hell we’ve gone down for decades.

I didn’t step foot in my hometown (Fort Collins, Colo.) for 20 years and two weeks until this March. It was great to see it with outsider’s eyes and find a lovely town! And also I will never go back!

Every time a ruling happens, when your response is "they won't comply," you're just helping them. Stop it. The end.

I see a lot of this information going around without attribution to the journalists. @wired.com reported on Brenden Cuni, who was present in NY and has a history of violence. He has been with CBP and then ICE for a decade.

The first Russian diesel cargo heading for the US left St Petersburg on September 22, two weeks *before* Trump announced the deal with Putin, Windward reports. The Greek-flagged tanker Minerva Zen carrying 275,000 barrels of diesel/gasoil is due at the US East Coast around 11–12 October.

I don’t want to downplay threatening emails. I’ve gotten them, and it’s scary and it sucks. But come the fuck on. The attack on Rep. Omar was more recent than all of these.

Actual violence also spiked during that period: assassination attempts against Donald Trump, the killing of Charlie Kirk, the assassination of a legislative leader and her husband in Minnesota, the firebombing of Gov. Josh Shapiro's home in Pennsylvania. For many elected officials, the escalation is a grim testament to the toxicity of violent rhetoric and how it can shake the country's democratic institutions.
@gillianbrockell.comOct 11, 2026, 1:01 PM

Do my eyes deceive me, or does this article that mentions the assassination of Charlie Kirk, who was not an elected official, not mention that Rep. Ilhan Omar was physically attacked less than 10 months ago?!?!?!

Cuban Americans in power don’t yet realize that Cubans are the primary victims of third-country removal. Hell, a certain Cuban American former senator is rubber-stamping it! They might think their proximity to whiteness will protect them from this white supremacist government. It will not.

“…the Supreme Court has effectively ratified third-country removal of the sort that Gakou faces…”

An outrageous story on its own. Even more outrageous when you find out the same county has charged three children with falsely reporting sexual abuse since her case.

Today in history, 1957: President Eisenhower apologizes to Ghanaian Finance Minister Komla Agbeli Gbedemah, who was denied service in a segregated restaurant. It was one of many incidents involving African dignitaries and a factor in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. /1

Ghanaian Finance Minister Komla Abela Gbedemah (left) meets with President Dwight D. Eisenhower (center) and Vice President Richard Nixon (right) at the White House on Oct. 10, 1957. The meeting was arranged after Gbedemah was refused indoor service at a Howard Johnson’s restaurant in Dover, Del. President Eisenhower issued a formal apology and invited Gbedemah to the White House for breakfast to address the incident. He and Nixon expressed regret and discussed financial assistance for Ghana’s Akosombo Dam project. Following the incident, Howard Johnson’s management instructed the Dover restaurant to serve all customers regardless of race. However, Howard Johnson’s operated largely through a franchise model, and individual owners often adhered to local Jim Crow laws or deep-seated regional customs. The refusal to implement a nationwide policy turned Howard Johnson’s into a prime target for civil rights groups. Photo credit: Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum.
