Mayoral candidates talk a good line about defending Scarborough transit, but the actual decline of service over the past decade is never mentioned. stevemunro.ca/2026/10/10/i...

Olivia Chow is not a perfect transit mayor, but she's my choice. stevemunro.ca/2026/10/06/w...

The train is physically in the preceding block but the signal circuit for the next block begins ahead of the signal allowing automatic key by.

@swanboatsteve.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 1:07 PM

I suspect once upon a time an actual key was involved. Signalling technology has been around for over a century.

If two trains running close together pass an ABS they are "seen" as a single train. At a double aspect signal the gap is detected and a following train would be tripped.

@swanboatsteve.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 12:46 PM

The track circuits work differently at ABS signals. Instead of the insulated joint on the signal rail being right at the signal, it is a short distance ahead. This allows a train to pull right up to the signal and occupy the next signal block. The trip arm goes down automatically.

@swanboatsteve.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 12:38 PM

Note that this is done only with a red over red over solid amber signal. If the amber is flashing the route is clear and the trip arm is already down but to be operated at low speed. Typically seen at pairs of double aspect signals approaching an interlocking.

If you look on the tunnel wall just past the station there is a small square box. This holds the manual key by lever an operator can reach from the cab window to lower the trip arm. This arrangement only applies to signals at interlockings where there are double aspect signals.

(2/2) The TTC planned to get 20 ebuses from each of three vendors but BYD only managed to supply 10. Somehow the Sun doesn't care about lobbying and collusion involving pols they supported.

@swanboatsteve.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 11:54 AM

The Proterras are all retired and the company out of business. It's not clear why the Sun chose to make a big thing out of this. TO is not the only city burned by this. The real scandal should have been BYD's attempt to get a sole source contract. A Tory era failure. (1/2)

Yonge station is cut and cover and shallow compared to the OL. It passes under Bloor Station toward the west end and it was easy to build support for the existing subway.

Alex: I think you mean Eglinton East. There has never been a plan for a Finch East LRT except a dumb idea McGuinty had for extending the Finch West line east and south to Don Mills Stn.
