Bristol Samaritans need more volunteers.

Demand for their support is high, with someone calling the Samaritans every 10 seconds in a moment of distress.

If you could spare the time to support someone when they need it most, find out more and sign up here: www.samaritans.org/branches/bri...

What happens if AI systems are used by bad actors - or if we lose control of them altogether? I discussed the safeguards we need for AI with Anthony Scaramucci on BBC Newsnight.

When I was in government, we were having serious conversations about AI risks. The challenge is separating what’s real from what’s hype. That’s why we need independent testing, better evidence and international cooperation to understand what’s really happening with AI.

AI-driven productivity can help us grow the economy and pay for the public services we want. I spoke to Sky News about how AI can support more productive businesses, higher wages, and more tax revenue.

The pupils here tell me they're going to read all 2,000 of their new books - and I believe them! A great morning in Southmead opening the new home for Elmfield School for Deaf Children and the refurbished Badocks Wood Academy. Thank you to everyone for the warm welcome.

On the one hand, AI is going to end humanity. On the other, it's all just marketing hype before an IPO. I spoke with Times Radio to discuss why governments can't afford to wait and see, when AI agents are already making decisions without us knowing.

We’ve recently been asking: will AI kill us?

Instead, we should be asking: how will AI make Britain richer and fairer?

We’ll soon see cracks in the foundations of our economy if we’re too slow to respond.

A rainy but very warm welcome in Henleaze this morning. The Bristol North West Labour team and I get out and about all year round to listen to local residents - come rain or shine!

@darrenpjones.bsky.socialSep 18, 2026, 8:01 PM

Bristol North West is home to some brilliant high streets - including Gloucester Road, with the longest stretch of independent shops in Europe. The Government is putting power back in the hands of local people, backing local businesses and giving communities a real say over their high streets.

200 constituents joined me at St Monica’s Trust to watch the People’s Emergency Briefing on climate change, followed by an important conversation and Q&A with Dr. Alix Dietzel from the University of Bristol.

We should take steps to make sure unsafe AI doesn’t cause harm.

But we shouldn’t ban safe AI when it’s the main driver of growth in the UK.

I joined BBC Newscast to discuss this and my call for parliaments and governments to step up.

This shouldn’t be a new mega-regulator for the UK or anyone else, but an independent, expert-led accreditation of what’s happening at the frontier and what we should all do about it.

@darrenpjones.bsky.socialSep 14, 2026, 8:35 AM

But we must step up. The UK created the AI Security Institute - recognised as a world leading team for AI safety. We should lead the debate and offer to scale up AISI to provide its services to other countries via a new multi-lateral framework for the oversight of so called “super-intelligence”.

@darrenpjones.bsky.socialSep 14, 2026, 8:35 AM

I wouldn’t say lawmakers are “freaking out” but it’s right we respond to calls from AI labs to help pace the frontier. That mustn’t mean banning innovation or science, or over regulating and killing off safe AI start ups in the UK (the main driver of economic growth in the UK in the last quarter).

@darrenpjones.bsky.socialSep 12, 2026, 9:24 AM

Britain is pro-innovation, a world leader in science and a brilliant place to start up a business - especially when using AI.

We must get the balance right between this and rightly calling for multi-lateral frameworks for the safe development of technology.

Lovely to be able to spend an hour with the brilliant @labourlist.bsky.social team to talk a bit about the past two years and what should come next.

Great to see the new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus, next to Bristol Temple Meads, open today.

Congratulations to the University of Bristol, West of England Combined Authority, Network Rail and partners for this brilliant regeneration project.

I don’t support calls to ban innovation or scientific endeavour. It’s a false choice that undermines some of our greatest strengths.

But the pace of AI development highlights how slow our institutions are - be that parliaments, governments or regulators.
