FInding it as a hand-copied floppy, with no packaging or instructions or explanation, just a handwritten label that said "HACKER," probably enhanced the effect more than the game deserved

It's hard to write a story where everyone already knows the ending. I tried to put a slightly different spin on the Padres experience, which feels more and more like the thrill of skydiving without a reserve parachute.

The original was a taut thriller. The sequel could be even better.

“The sequel to last night or to Yamamoto starting G2 last year?”

Well the timeline splits at what we call a ‘diversion point’ creating a rapidly expanding multiversal cinematic univer

On the San Diego Padres, and the choice to not look down.

It will come to an end. It might not even be long, now.

People have often noted how silly it is that the coaches wear uniforms, now that we’re four decades separated from MLB’s last player-manager. But the corporations that own sports franchises themselves like to dress up in their team’s clothing, plaster their city’s name on their pullovers and memorandums as though there’s something civic to them, some unbreakable bond between team and place that conveniently breaks once a stadium gets old enough to drink. They suggest a permanence, not just of place but of structure: Not only do corporations rarely die, they don’t go into rebuilding modes. The corporation is one of modernity’s great paradoxes: an inhuman thing made out of humans, built to stand forever and managed one fiscal quarter at a time.

Instead of wasting the afternoon before White Sox / Guardians ALDS Game 5, spend that time reading my preview @baseballprospectus.com.

Come for the analysis, stay for the video of Sam Antonacci’s rippling buttcheek.

We’ll have to include this in Make-Up Games next time I can bug @marcnormandin.bsky.social into joining me. Too bad there won’t be a big gap in the calendar soon where we’ll be desperate for content

That era of the Atari/Commodore had so much incredible trash, and the internet never even really considered sifting through the rubble

@euqubud.baseballprospectus.comOct 9, 2026, 3:25 AM

I have never been able to find the video game baseball I grew up on. Well, played first. It was an Atari 400 game that cut to the individual fielder on balls it play, and you had to move them with a joystick to intercept the ball

I think the conclusion holds up, personally. Please do not bore me with objections that include "logistics"

This is what’s truly at stake here: not the fairness, but the drama. Baseball, as with all professional sports, has boiled a century of sportswriting down to a reduction of a single argument: the power of disrespect. The source of the me that he perpetually hates, of course, can vary: sometimes it’s the national media, sometimes it’s a hit batter or an imagined slight, sometimes it’s fifth-grade math. But it always comes down to the same four chords.

Ranked choice would give us, if not something new for athletes to grind their axes on, a more compelling subject for analysis. The concept of the chess match is itself another cliche in the sportswriting handbook, but it’s the metaphor of choice for a reason: Chess is the perfect sport for analysis, with its complete information and countless possibilities and variants. We could have that, at least for a couple hours before the next series starts, and it would cost us next to nothing. It won’t even cost money, Rob Manfred. You can do it.

It's funny: part of MLB's proposal is letting high-seeded teams choose their own playoff opponents, and I wrote a proposal for just that, five years and one day ago. Obviously with the expanded playoffs, avoiding division-related imbalance is a big reason, but I also argued that it's just fun.

Ironically it worked out for me, because they also neglected to tell the students about their plan, and when they found out apparently enough of them complained that they had to put me back on my old schedule on overtime pay. Very gratifying, probably not applicable in this situation

Once when I was teaching English overseas, the bosses of our hagwon approached us saying they were reorganizing and asked if we were interested in having Saturdays off. We said sure, sounds great, and then they did it and were like "OK great now we're going to pay you less"
