It's a good question. Also: How hard will those simple-cycle gas turbines run? US 2025 average was around 17% capacity factor, but xAI data center and similar projects suggest FAR higher capacity factors. It's a weird new world out there.

There is still controversy over the question of whether supply side interventions can make a difference to greenhouse gas submissions. If you understand that the fight for climate stabilization is a political process, it becomes clear that fighting supply side projects is essential.

Remember the mysterious trades on oil back in March/April that were perfectly timed to Trump's announcements, netting the traders millions of dollars? Well a CFTC official referred the matter to the enforcement dept...then a Trump goon told the CFTC to squelch it. www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

Indeed! (I was lead author on that paper, and that sentence was written by my sociologist colleague Georgia Piggot, not on social media). And yet...shifting the goal posts in that specific way may no longer be what we need given developments since?

I wrote that sentence... I expect a podcast will be out later this week where I talk about the implications a bit more

"We estimate that for each barrel of oil not produced... global oil consumption would drop by 0.2–0.6 barrels over the long term." We're seeing these dynamics, governed in part by elasticities of supply and demand, play out in real time in the extreme, real-world example of the Strait of Hormuz.

And: "delegitimizing industries that have undermined climate policy-making efforts. These social movements have also helped shift moral norms about what development is acceptable, which may ultimately offer sustained momentum away from fossil fuels and towards a low-carbon future."

"the permitting processes for oil pipelines sparked unprecedented levels of citizen engagement in climate and energy policy-making, which in turn attracted the involvement of diverse constituencies, ... shifting the goalposts on what is considered ambitious climate action."

In case you needed more evidence that Musk is harvesting data about all of us for his democracy-destruction project: these texts include links to his superPAC's website VoteSafe, which collects personal information. Getting pretty tired of being DOGE'd by this guy.

"AI is really good at automating our worst tendencies. It amplifies the unspoken cultural practices no one likes, but no individual can reasonably deviate from. It exploits the mechanized traditions recalcitrant to collective action. In that vein, AI can now write useless theory papers."

"The “faster” Fourier transform is merely an example where theory gets so unmoored from the original question that an “open problem” becomes nothing more than an academic status puzzle."

"Last week, New Jersey fined DataOne $1.1 million for running 45 unpermitted generators. This was the largest enforcement action the state has ever taken against a data center. It’s also a rounding error for a big data firm. Rest unassured, the generators are still running"

Feels like not enough people are aware of how fully cooked the internal combustion engine is. My mum's old diesel Honda currently costs ÂŁ120 to fill up, on which it'll do just under 300 miles. My sister's EV costs ÂŁ6 for a full charge which will take her 280 miles.
