Disturbingly, this piece keeps becoming more and more true. In Idiocracy, the death penalty is carried out on a pay per view TV show called ‘Monday Night Rehabilitation’…

The Deputy Mayor and a LD Cllr took part in the luge.

We should turn this into a national sport. One way to liven up the high street!

It’s a lot of fun as a spectator sport (and for charity).

There’s a huge database of things like this in Penny Mordaunt’s most recent book - some wondrous weird events out there.

So many wonderful / mad events across the country, which we don't celebrate nearly enough.

Very proud to be British. More of this please. And a nice cup of tea afterwards.

Intriguingly the winners of the skiing are multi-year defending champions so there is evidently a knack to it.

I’m calling it: this is officially the best extreme sport. I’m going to get in training for next year’s luge…

Never stop being weird and wonderful, folks!!

@wallaceme.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 11:27 AM

It’s time for the luge!

There’s a traditional chant for the crowd, origins lost to the mists of time: the host shouts “Don’t eat those grapes” and the crowd reply: “They’ve not been washed.”

First time attending Surbiton Ski Sunday, where people strap blocks of ice to their feet and compete to ski down a soaped street. I love this country.

I’m so lucky to live in “one of South West London’s most stinktive burrows”. #AISlop

£22bn was the 2020 gross payment (ie without the rebate), or the 2020 payment net of rebate adjusted for inflation to today. Both are defensible figures in my view - alternatively you can use our previous % of GNI (net of rebate) which was 0.68% = £21bn

I personally tend not to automatically assume that opinions I don’t share are disingenuous.

@wallaceme.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 3:34 PM

I did, and would do so again.

@wallaceme.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 3:23 PM

You can argue by all means that £22bn of spending is economically beneficial. Just as someone can argue that £22bn of tax cuts would be, if they wish. But neither can argue either is not a large financial commitment.

@wallaceme.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 3:19 PM

Spending is spending even if it’s spending you like.

@wallaceme.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 3:19 PM

I really don’t think “we pledge to rejoin the EU which will cost £22bn+ a year but we’re counting it as zero because there’ll be a referendum” really works as no big spending commitment.
