The British Fantasy Society does not allow the use of generative AI in any of its spaces. For more on this, read the interview with outgoing chair Shona Kinsella from earlier this year. This position has not changed since last week's AGM. ⬇️

Good news! Possible coral bleaching recovery through symbiont transfer from healthy (and same genet) corals. Yes, we still need to prevent mass bleaching events (and we seem to be going backwards 🤬) but this brings some hope that reefs can be revived 🧪

We did get a clarifying email today that, if anything, shows nothing so sensitive should ever be announced in bite-size for social media.

Every new tech "wearable" is about sneaking around consent. Corpos know AI surveillance is incredibly unpopular, so their bugs (literally, it's called "Bee") are designed to be discreet. "No one knows you're recording" is a feature. If I catch you with one of these in my lecture, I will destroy it.

Amazon’s personal AI wearable maker, Bee, is announcing its first new products since being acquired by the retail giant last year. The tech company on Thursday introduced the Bee Frontier, the next generation of its device that can be worn on the wrist or pinned to clothes, along with Bee Eclipse, a credit-card-sized device that magnetically attaches to the back of your smartphone.

I'm putting the final touches on this talk which I'm giving Saturday (8 pm London time, I think). One last exposé of Abbasid period art pigments/dyes for the year, and then I'll focus on my writing and translating for a while.

In northern Lebanon, Douma preserves centuries of history through its stone houses, red-tiled roofs, traditional architecture and historic cinema. Recognised by UN Tourism as one of the Best Tourism Villages in 2023, the village continues to protect its cultural and architectural identity

"ethical use of chemical warfare" "ethical use of revenge p0rn" "ethical use of phishing scams" are but a few things that come to mind.

Apropos of nothing, we used to use lead in pipes, asbestos in construction, CFCs in fridges, radium in...way too much, and now for some reason, we don't. It's almost like we can discover something, find out we're using it in terribly unhealthy ways, and then stop using it.
