I don't recall watching a film or TV adaptation of "The Lottery" in school, but I do recall reading the original story by Shirley Jackson:

Seems like a rewatch of Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” is appropriate after recent news headlines.

GenXers watched this film in school for very good reasons.

It’s now banned, when its message is most needed.🪨

I wanted to add a few previously unpublished pieces to my collection so it didn't consist entirely of works that had been previously published in various small-press publications. It's mostly, but not entirely, such works.

Fairyland Fantasyku

By Richard H. Fay

dishes clang
unfinished chores done
labouring brownie

cornstalks sway
ripe grain swiftly reaped
harvesting grogoch

pickaxe knocks
cave-in avoided
forewarning kobold

twirling gleam
toadstool ring illumed
cavorting fairy

hammer rings
single shoe mended
cobbling leprechaun

shadow darts
needed tools vanish
borrowing pixy

pleading cries
rover led astray
deceiving bogle

fogbank rolls
dank cloak spreads disease
corrupting Grey Man

hooves thunder
mortal rider drowned
murdering kelpie

Bloody Redcap

by Richard H. Fay

Gruff dwarf,
Malign goblin,
Hater of humankind,
Spills mortal blood to dye his hat
Bright red.

Redcap of Dunnor Peel

by Richard H. Fay

Grisly deeds done in days of yore
Forever tainted Dunnor Peel.
Evil acts performed in years past
On guiltless babe and stainless maid
Cursed tall tower, damned lordly hall.
Behind those walls where murder reigned,
Where grim laird once held bloody sway,
A borderland haunt prowls the dark.

Atop night-blackened battlements,
Phantom lights and eldritch murmurs
Disturb midnight’s starlit stillness.
Iron-shod footsteps stomp across
Wooden floors long rotted away.
Within that fortress cold and dank,
A fiery-eyed dwarf roams the dark.

A human caught in Dunnor falls
To a pikestaff wickedly thrust
Right through his beating mortal heart.
The savagely gruesome goblin
Re-dyes his faded crimson cap
In a pool of freshly spilt blood.
With gore-stained hat upon his pate,
A murdering fiend stalks the dark.

OK, I never went to art school, but I did take high school art classes back in the 1980s. I don't recall the art teacher ever telling us art students to draw without using references. One of the first drawing projects we did was go outside and draw from nature. I drew a tree.

I'd like to know how any illustrator worth their salt would manage to work WITHOUT using references. Illustrators have to know something about what they're illustrating.
