Since it first resurfaced, Appius and Virginia has also been translated into four different languages. German:

The good, self-sacrificing other woman was such a popular theme in the early 1930s. To Back Street you could add Illicit, Ann Vickers, Child of Manhattan (John Boles, again), and The Life of Vergie Winters (John Boles, again).

Eight years ago, I wrote about the first of Gertrude Trevelyan's remarkable & utterly neglected novels, Appius and Virginia, a dark, unique tale of species in collision. I'm happy that it led to Trevelyan's rediscovery—and will be coming out in 2028 from Boiler House Press.

Yes! Though he gets little chance to do Dwight Frye-ing, sadly.

The first film version of The Maltese Falcon, released in 1931, is usually disparaged in comparison with John Huston's 1941 version, but for me, Ricardo Cortez comes closer to the true cheesy spirit of Dashiell Hammett's character than Humphrey Bogart. This is the true Pre-Code Sam Spade.

Exactement! When the first train was about halfway past, I heard a signal blow right in front of me. I couldn't figure out how that came from a railcar until I noticed the second one behind it.

But wait... there's more. Fortunately, I had just walked through a tranquil park and took the ten minute wait as time to meditate on the beauties of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe.

101 years ago today, the New York Times reviewed Nathan Asch's first novel, The Office, a kaleidoscopic, impressionistic account of the day a Wall St. broker went bust: "It is fluid and plastic and enormously fresh and stimulating." It's also in the public domain.

...whose actual causal connection to the crimes seemed mostly to exist in the author's imagination rather than the page. I'm not saying Ann Rule has it right, but not every murder is directly linked to everything and the meaning of the universe.

Does a smelter and toxic waste play a major role? If so, I share your frustration.

My wife and I just watched the closing episode of 70 Up and we both felt a sudden and overwhelming sense of loss. We saw 28 Up in Santa Monica when we'd been married a year and have followed ever since. What a privilege to follow these lives. Our thanks to everyone responsible.

Going Nowhere by Alvin Greenberg (1971) Greenberg is a writer I've liked since college, but it's Harry Crews's review in the NY Times that got me interested: "This is the first novel with a spaceship in it I've been able to finish since I was 10."

Ya gotta love the way mass market paperback publishers pumped up the lurid. Maxine Kumin, best known as a poet, opens The Passions of Uxport with the mystic revery of a guy scraping roadkill off a highway. It's quite a good, serious novel—not that the cover gives us any clue.
