Artists, post your sketch vs. final art 🦊

One step of the artwork progress: Sketch.

Initial idea with sketchy lines and additional coloured lines for clothing (blue) and anatomy/line of action adjustments (red) or hair (green, not present here).

I tend to do quite refined sketchy lines where quite a bit of details are added to the initial sketch even though it doesn't need to be as detailed.

One step of the artwork progress: Lineart.

Turning the sketch into line art that are final, though the lines may change during later steps as my mind can change.

More recently I have started to do more "rougher clean lines" for the lineart as I enjoy the slightly rough'er look and try to embrace making small mistakes here and there and not cleaning up every bit.

One step of the artwork progress: Colouring + shading.

Using the colours, I don't quite pick the exact colours as the final colours will be different when shading and other effects are added to the top. Sometimes the colour is flat, sometimes it's not perfect flat depending on the mood. Lighting is also usually added during this step, but in this picture I forgot to add it.

For shading, here are the simplest shading which is usually painted in and combined with other shading styles (hard cel shading for certain areas and soft painterly bits to cover the rest). Shading colour is not black, but either the under colour or dark blue/purple with varying opacity and multiply-layer effect.

One step of the artwork progress: Final polish.

Adding the gradient layers, colouring the lineart with another subtle colour and more shading. It also includes adding background elements and overlay materials if needed. I tend to add multiple different layers of lighting/shading where I might add small little bits to enhance areas or larger batches of spray brush to affect how light/dark some areas are.

Gradients can also play a huge effect on how the final look goes and I tend to use a "nightsky" gradient (dark purples fading through orange to bright warm yellows) with layer-effects to make it more vibrant, though sometimes you might add something random, experiment with layer-effects to see if they work.
