Excellent summary on speed cameras from Ecology Action's report from July 2025

ecologyaction.ca/sites/defaul...

In the Spring of 2025, the Provincial government sharedthat Automated
Speed Enforcement (ASE) technology, like speed cameras, may finally be implementable in 2026. With this new tool in the road safety toolbox, there are opportunities, risks and public opinion to consider.
The Ecology Action Centre commissioned a public opinion study by Narrative Research in May 2025. The results demonstrated that a majority of Nova
Scotians support the use of automated speed enforcement - 64% of Nova
Scotians support fixed speed camerasand 65% support the use of speed-ongreen cameras (cameras that capture running red lights and speeding through intersections). In the study, 47% of Nova Scotians reported seeing a vehicle driving over the posted speed limit on their street at least once a day.
ASE is a tool. It provides the opportunity to make broad municipal and
province wide speed limit reductions via enforcement. This is an opportunity
to reduce fatalities, collision-based congestion, and the strain on our
overburdened healthcare system.

The long-awaited Traffic Safety Act will take effect on October 19th.
We have questions, including yielding to persons not on foot using crosswalks, key vulnerable road user offences, and the unexpected turnaround on photo radar

it's the kind of "parent" legislation which provides that more detailed regulations can be made. Critically the Road User Regulations which cover much of the fundamentals we are concerned about

Another query:
Drivers are only required to yield to pedestrians under the new road user regulations.
"pedestrians" are defined in the main Act as people on foot only.
So what about people in wheelchairs, mobility scooters, etc?
novascotia.ca/just/regulat...

21 Crosswalks
(1) A driver of a vehicle must yield to a pedestrian who is either
(a) lawfully in a crosswalk; or
(b) stopped at the edge of the roadway facing a crosswalk and lawfully
permitted to cross.

the Regs refer to pedestrians only for driver yielding requirements, see Reg 21

Another major one: What about legalizing crossrides for cyclists?

@visionzerokh.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 9:46 PM

from the Act itself: ""pedestrian" means an individual on foot, and includes an individual" sounds daft, but that is it as drafted

"Tilley said there’s more research required before the province decides it will move ahead with using photo radar in the province:

“As of right now, we’re content with the enforcement levels we have” "

Provisional queries & concerns: - Clarification needed regarding the new Vulnerable Road User offences - Disabled cyclists need not dismount at crosswalks, but drivers only required to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks - Dooring offences don't mention cyclists, only "traffic" - No photo radar

"research shows that most children are not developmentally equipped to safely navigate traffic environments designed around moving automobiles quickly and efficiently. Yet we routinely build communities around this priority, leaving children dependent on adults for their mobility"

Well it sure is good that Halifax's road safety strategy doesn't make the assumption that kids are responsible enough to be safe road users.

If you care about voting for candidates who take road safety seriously, we've just published our Vancouver voting guide here: visionzerovancouver.ca/2026/10/03/v...

Distraction is the second leading cause of fatal crashes in our region and province. We hope that all candidates take that seriously, especially those from a party campaigning on public safety. (Video from ABC School Board Candidate Lina Vargas on Instagram)

We tried to do something in Vancouver but ABC voted it down. They put cars over children. Oh by the way it's the first day of early voting and the sun is shining ☀️

My current model for Quinpool is Saint Denis (Montreal). Having been there more recently than this pic, I can tell you it's even better now that the trees and gardens have grown.

Before and after image of Rue Saint Denis in Montreal. In both, like Quinpool, it has a wide total width and a low-rise row structure in each side with lots of shops. Before, it has 5 lanes, 2 of which are being sporadically used for parking. After, it has 2 car lanes separated by a periodic garden median facilitating midblock crosswalks, plus two bike lanes that are well-separated from the motor vehicle lanes with periodic concrete curbs.

Agree. Data shows this is one of the most dangerous roads in HRM for cyclists and pedestrians. Road space reallocation could start quickly with tactical bike and bus lanes

meanwhile at Lacewood and Dunbrack, zero reported crashes for nearly three years with simple changes to traffic lights

Vision Zero is healthcare, and a moral and ethical obligation.
Have you heard we can't achieve substantial harm reduction?
Share this with your Councillor. Ask why we cannot achieve the same successes. Results are key.
