"I'll make my own [fill in the blank]...with blackjack, and hookers!" happens a lot too. Also yes, the Venture Bros!

Name a Futurama quote. This gets said around our house a lot. I'm sure you are all shocked.

Stumbled across this absolutely iconic sentence in a Goodreads review for a book I was looking up. Will I finish the book? I don't know. But I will remember this.

One time there was a swan attack and the language a gentlemen responded to it with in company of a lady was not proportional to the circumstances, unless his father was murdered by a swan and he has like severe unresolved swan trauma--which to be fair, who amongst us doesn't have unresolved bird trauma, mine is with Canadian geese.

Oh, I should dig that up. My kids would love it. I was gonna say Terry Pratchett's Tiffany Aching books would make a nice adaptation.

Gosh, I want someone this direct to come run against Ron Johnson. ๐Ÿ˜‘

Holy shit!

What an excellent use of form, of title and poem in counterpoint, of humor, of everything.

You can get it anywhere in ebook or on itch in paperback: xanthippe42.itch.io/the-alignments

You might want to read the Wisconsin Gothic series at leas through Troth before you grab this. Find those here:

#FridayFling Attract! I use this word a lot, but this time it's from The Alignments, a novella I wrote that came out last December. It's a fun little romp through Carnac, France, featuring standing stones, weird magic, bad choices, and crazy elderly French people.

There were two ways into Curia's apartment: the front door and the balcony. The front door would have been much simpler, but it had the problem of being visible to everyone else on the floor, in addition to anyone who wandered in. Their little adventure knocking on the doors earlier had made it clear that the neighbors weren't exactly interested in making friends. Possibly they were already under suspicion, for being outsiders who arrived just before the tragedy if nothing else.
This made the less noticeable route across the balconies more attractive. The sun was setting in a fiery blaze out at sea, and the beach was empty. They were exposed, and yet entirely private. That was why he'd decided to bring Sam to Carnac in the first place.

The cover of The Alignments, by EH Lupton, is an oil painting featuring three standing stones on a beach beneath a moody sky.

Discworld, too! There are series within the world that you probably want to read in order, but you don't have to, and you can start in multiple places. (I have been trying to do this, and working in the background info to each book is very hard. I don't remember what people might not already know!)

Update: apparently it changed in 2025. This is very sad and annoying. When I managed to place a poem in Asimov's, it was the most prestigious publication I'd ever been in. It still is, I guess. ๐Ÿ˜‘

I wonder when this changed, or if it's more for art? The contract I had from Asimov's (circa 2023) was a v standard first English language serial rights and non-exclusive foreign serial rights contract. Very disappointing way to treat anyone, that's for sure.

This is the greatest possible response to learning you've won a Nobel.

It was a short call, Carlberg said: All the poet would say was she
was "in Iceland," where she was
"listening to the wind."

Absolutely. I'll be here forever.

I have put down an otherwise charming cozy mystery because one character said he dropped out of medical school during his residency where he was training to be a psychologist. It was published by Kensington, who apparently don't employ editors or something. ๐Ÿ™„

It wouldn't be much troubleโ€”I have a great love of Memorial (srsly, I've written several novels with scenes there). But I do wonder if you could get whatever you're wanting via ILL. Would possibly be easier and faster for you.

I am in Madison! I don't currently have access (no longer a student), but I could apply for a day pass!

Interesting question! I think he initially has a somewhat contentious relationship with tarot in general when we meet him in DIW, but I think he eventually settles into it.
