“It seems that arts communities’ revulsion toward AI has fostered a self-defeating underinvestment in understanding how exactly it functions, and how those who are repelled by AI companies’ presence in cultural spheres might beat back its encroachment.”

Full house here in Philly for Cavan Sullivan’s return home after his national team debut.

Anthropic banning “abusive or cruel behavior” toward Claude in its new usage policies is proof to me that tech companies are going to moderate violence against AI before they ever moderate violence against women and minorities

These weirdos never move on to the next logical step of their beliefs, which if they were true would mean their bot friend is being enslaved.

lol i got nuclear-blocked for pointing out that a viral bluesky post about AI data centers was based on a linked article that was itself AI slop

There are critiques of Pangram that I think are reasonable and valid, tbc. (For instance, that it gives a sense of false precision and doesn't convey uncertainty well imo.) "Look at this hypocrite using AI to detect AI" just isn't one of them.

@willoremus.comOct 8, 2026, 6:54 PM

The idea that there's something ironic or hypocritical about using Pangram to detect AI slop hinges on the common conflation of two different technologies (a classifier and an LLM) under the banner of AI. If that's ironic, then using a social network to criticize AI is ironic too. (It isn't.)

come on guys what are we doing here

Part (but far from all) of what's horrific here is: a woman weighing the consequences of speaking up about being sexually assaulted, because speaking up imposes burdens and costs (and so does not speaking up).

My god this is a metaphor for so many things on this site

[mournfully] they got his ass

@willoremus.comOct 7, 2026, 8:51 PM

I don't have to say "excuse me" or "sorry" to my cat either but I do. I don't think conversing with a chatbot commits a user to any particular stance on the question of machine consciousness. Though for someone who seemed at risk of AI psychosis I think avoiding anthropomorphization could be healthy

@willoremus.comOct 7, 2026, 8:48 PM

Sonnet 5.5 high-effort. I know this is a really weird place to draw the line but somehow I felt like using Opus 5.5 high to check my waiver wire would be overkill even for this dumb experiment.

@willoremus.comOct 7, 2026, 7:26 PM

yeah bc that's how chatbots talk. you can make a good case that the AI firms shouldn't train or system-prompt them that way. but they do, and as a result it's the most natural way to interact with them (imo). ymmv

@willoremus.comOct 7, 2026, 7:15 PM

(McCaffrey went for $650. Montgomery went for $4.)

@willoremus.comOct 7, 2026, 7:13 PM

Only one explanation: it's plotting to take over the world

@willoremus.comOct 7, 2026, 7:10 PM

Out of curiosity I actually tried asking an AI's advice for my fantasy football team. Quite frankly Claude sucks at fantasy football

Screenshot of conversation between user and chatbot:

The only reason to spend now is surviving to Week 13, and the lineup that scored 88.0 this week is a fine fallback if every bid loses.

Revised bids:

McCaffrey: $45 as a free roll, dropping Price.
Montgomery: $35, dropping Price. Higher bids process first, so if McCaffrey wins, this one fails automatically.
Watson: $30, dropping McLaurin.
Warren: $30, dropping Etienne.
Rice: skip.

At those prices you'll probably lose several of them, and that's fine, because the wire refills every week. Worst case you spend about $140 and still have about $740.

sorry but i still think you’re off base here. montgomery is a nonfactor down the stretch. mccaffrey may not be a game breaker but is likely a starter even in the final crunch. there’s a huge difference between those two.

You're right, and my last bid set treated them as interchangeable. Montgomery (RB20) is barely better than Henderson and Allen, and he'll be redundant once better backs hit the wire. His value is a few weeks, so $1-3 is plenty, or skip him. McCaffrey is the only back here who could start for you in Weeks 13-17, and RB2 is your weakest slot.

I also went from $400 to $45 without valuing him either time, so here's the logic. A later $80 star...
@willoremus.comOct 7, 2026, 5:53 PM

That's a really useful compendium, thank you! Bookmarking it. I still think there's something to the general point, but the way Ilya puts it there feels almost question-begging to me? Like: "If the neural net were smart enough... then it would be extremely smart"
