The idea that you can stop the system from perpetrating the evil that it's been engaged in for centuries by participating in a process controlled by said system, like voting, is preposterous. You can't vote out fascism, let alone use electoralism to change the hearts of the people who believe in it.

Like there's hard lessons about "lesser evil" tactics in the actual history in that, but it's not the ones today's liberals think. Like any era there's a lot of different, grounded interpretations of the Weimar Republic and the rise of fascism, but the tropes I reference above are just untrue.

* Social democrats and liberals largely did vote for geriatric conservative general Hindenburg as the "lesser evil" to prevent Hitler winning the presidency in 1932. Hindenburg won. He then appointed Hitler chancellor and repeatedly signed off on every measure the nazis needed to seize power.

That they repeatedly armed and strengthened the far-right to do it — which any historian worth a damn considers a key part of fascism's rise in the Weimar years — gets left out of these tropes.

Like there's plenty of actual criticisms of various leftist groups in that era, especially the main German communist party, the KPD. But the lack of an alliance gets pinned on radical instransigence rather that the socdems kept massacring or cracking down on damn near anyone to their left...

A certain brand of ahistorical nonsense about the Weimar years that comes up as ways to lecture leftists, so some facts: * SPD never had any intention of a united front with leftists. They violently suppressed leftist organizing (1918-19, Blutmai in 1929) often in collaboration with the far-right.
