I'm not sure whether I trust that specific list.

Should this make me enthusiastic

"Not by rejecting the slop but by showing how much better it can be another way." Right now I feel certain that once we have a post-2025 no-slop software stack in an installable package, using it is going to require noticeable sacrifices. So either you convince people ethics matter, or you lose.

I am still struggling to get a clear picture of where the three BSDs stand on this. I wish someone would fork the pre-January-2026 Linux LTS. There are some things I have the capacity to make happen on my own and that's not one of them.

I can start contributing to Redox In fact I started one month ago

@dryad.technologyOct 12, 2026, 9:38 PM

Just needs work

@dryad.technologyOct 12, 2026, 9:38 PM

…then we don't remove it. Because no one will feel an incentive to. It's simply untrue that it's impossible to produce software using the practices that were standard in August of 2025. There are people who want to make it hard to do so & have the power to make it hard. That is a different problem.

@dryad.technologyOct 12, 2026, 9:33 PM

This is the case largely because the corps had first mover advantage and slipped slopcode into our machines with software updates. If people view slopcode as a negative and try to make choices to reduce it, perhaps we can get the slopcode back out. If everyone goes "well… I guess it's alright then".

@dryad.technologyOct 12, 2026, 9:19 PM

What I am currently looking at is Redox and the BSDs. Redox is going to need a lot of work to be an end user daily driver though.

@dryad.technologyOct 12, 2026, 9:17 PM

You could try reading it. You could try typing "mit license" into a search engine and reading the terms of the mit license. Of course I'm assuming you still know how to use a search engine and aren't just drinking data from the AI shit pipe

@dryad.technologyOct 12, 2026, 9:13 PM

"You say that 'AI code assistants' are based on theft and massive environmental damage. But have you considered that if I took that position seriously, I might not be able to play a Star War game?"

@dryad.technologyOct 12, 2026, 9:13 PM

I see a lot of people going "I understand AI is a moral outrage when it impacts *me*. But expecting me to avoid software written with AI would be very inconvenient for me. So you're going to have to allow some nuance into this discussion."

@dryad.technologyOct 12, 2026, 9:10 PM

There is no nuance. Don't use LLM generated software!

@dryad.technologyOct 12, 2026, 9:07 PM

Wait wait wait hold on are you suggesting MIT license is public domain?! MIT has conditions! Conditions that reuse via AI code assistant do not follow! All you're saying here is you respect artists but you don't respect coders.

@dryad.technologyOct 12, 2026, 9:06 PM

Software scraped by the AI companies is most likely to be open source, or otherwise the source is usually not publicly available at all. At which point you should absolutely no longer assume it was produced by a software company.

@dryad.technologyOct 12, 2026, 9:04 PM

Well, I'm the person whose open source code was stolen by the AI code generators, and I will in future no longer probably be able to get employment in writing software because companies prefer AI code generators, so obviously I'm going to see it differently.
