41% staffing cuts in the Faculty of Arts at UoN. We're entering a wilderness of creativity and critical thinking.

Cheers & to you & everyone else. Not really on here much these days but very much aware this is a sector-wide concern here in the UK and elsewhere

I'm on strike again. Depending on how things go, I may not teach another class until the end of October. Depressing, for many reasons. The University of Edinburgh continues to press ahead with massive job cuts, coming off the back of the largescale programme closures announced earlier this month.

Incidentally, while the fifth chapter will have a different title, the epigraphs and opening paragraph will remain the same

I have finally started a document for Chapter 4, the penultimate chapter and the first of two focusing on different kinds of playgoing repetition.

Title, in larger font: Chapter 4: Doctors Faustus: Repetition, Difference, and Audience Response

Three epigraphs follow:

Then if our wares shall seem to you well-woven, good and fine,
We hope we shall your custom have again, another time
Prologue to Robert Wilson, The Three Ladies of London

And then he dines; then sees a comedy;
And then he sups, and goes to bed again:
Thus round he runs without variety,
Save that sometimes he comes not to the play,
But falls into a whore-house by the way.
Sir John Davies of Hereford, ‘In Fuscum’, XXXIX

Hieronimo is mad againe
Title page of Thomas Kyd, The Spanish Tragedy

The first paragraph of an essay follows the epigraphs:

Doctor Faustus was damned on the 2nd October 1594. He was damned again, the following week and for a third time, later that same month. Faustus was damned on the stage of the Rose playhouse eight times in 1594, a further seven times the following year, and another eight times in 1596. Across the period for which daily accounts of the Rose playhouse survive, Philip Henslowe recorded the damnation of Faustus 25 times. Scholars regularly view the damnation of Faustus, or indeed, the death of any tragic protagonist, as a singular event; one long descent into Hell from which Faustus can never return. But Faustus did return. Again, and again, and again. The 25 performances recorded by Henslowe represents a fraction of the total number of times the play was performed across its early stage life.

Have you ever heard Bob Dylan's 1994 live version of Desolation Row? Heard it for the first time this week and can think of little else.

Does anyone know why the Irukandji jellyfish venom is so strong? What possible purpose could it serve? Or is it just a weird quirk of our physiology that it has such an absurd effect on humans? Am genuinely interested to know, should anyone have an answer.

A long time in the making, Reprints & Revivals of Renaissance Drama, which I edited with Harry Newman (a long time friend), is now out! It's a collection about forms of renewal in print & performance & their importance to the production & reception of early modern drama.
