(If you've followed along with some of my rants about religion, you may wonder "how does she reconcile believing ideology and religion are basically the same thing with being militantly anti-theist?" and the answer is "because I think superstition is the problem")

You can especially see this with Medieval European "heretical" christian sects, for which their primary conflicts with the established Church were usually more to do with ideas about the role of classes in society and how society should be governed than abstract spiritual practice

this is really important for you to understand premodern history, too there was no meaningful distinction between religion and political ideology before modernity, new religions were new ideologies and vice versa it's modernity that put religion in a box and confined to certain spheres

at some point, secular ideologies became so dominant in the west we started referring to theories of morality and governance that are based primarily on religion as "ideologies", too but they're all basically the same Kind of Thing as religion

in fact, the term "ideology" was itself invented in 1796 by Antoine Destutt de Tracy in an attempt to lay out a rational, materialist, secular moral basis for governance

the notion of ideologies being something separate from religions is a pretty recent one, and not every language even makes a meaningful lexical distinction between them we just started calling religions that justify themselves by non-supernatural appeals "ideologies" at some point

It is very common to accuse some political ideology or other of being "a religion" and yes, I would like to congratulate you on taking a sociology 101 class, political ideologies are absolutely the same kind of thing as a religion and this is a trivial observation

i personally would like to live in a large house in a nature preserve with no neighbors that is a five minute walk from grocery stores, nightlife and amenities, a good school, and my six-figure job. i don't see why this is so difficult

"Zombie" movie where it turns out the sickness is actually pretty survivable and most infected make a full recovery and at the end the protagonists are prosecuted for mass murder
