It's not a coincidence, for example, women and Black women specifically have been told through the ages and the present that their pain tolerance is higher. That is, that they feel less pain. doi.org/10.1073/pnas...

While now we have the door being pried open for machines to feel pain..?

For sheer unexpectedness, it’s right up there, isn’t it?

And pain and the capacity to feel it it have been linked to moral capacities in racialised populations. Which brings us full circle back to Sylvia Wynter as we ask who the human subject of human rights is; what claims we’re making on moral capacity and humanity when we claim machines feel pain.

People just think science is bigger than it is because science has such unreal outcomes for our lives. There just aren't enough scientists, there isn't enough funding, there isn't enough time and there isn't enough resource for our needs. People think their countries fund it much more than they do

An extra round of thanks to Ukraine today, then.

If you want to browse them all together you can look at the archive view on Tumblr: catsofyore.tumblr.com/archive But that's the closest thing I have to a gallery website. I do hope to do a book someday though!

This is, to my taste, the best American remake of a Japanese horror movie. It’s really good, including making good use of North American landscapes comparable but not identical to ones in Japan.

And even if they get it right, it’s a snippet out of context nd ignoring all the things other species do, as though a particular thing brine shrimp or a particular tree frog or one savannah predator should be our ironclad destiny.

This sounds like a great time to save $$ on diapers and donate to the annual Metro-Boston diaper drive, happening NOW! (Did you know WIC and SNAP don't cover diapers?) www.mbdiapers.org

The sinister Irish conspiracy to steal all our money continues, made worse by the sinister Irishman consistently delivering excellent work for the money. Just fiendish.

Unrelated upside of the supermarket- because I have not been commuting, I am way behind on my Audiobooks, so it gave me a chance to make some progress on @mytholder.bsky.social’s really delightful _The Sword Defiant_, which is why I had talking swords on the brain.

I went on a first date to see this in its original run. She likes horror too. I continue to like the movie a lot.

when I did legal aid, religious older clients tended to be more ashamed of their debts, but reminding them that usury is forbidden in the Bible genuinely helped some to get past the shame and start helping with their case. so I don't know if you've heard but Roger Marshall's opponent is a pastor,

Like, yeah, if you give it access to the internet and ask it to do things, it's gonna do things. It doesn't know what it's doing or where it is or what humans are or what a consequence is, but it can get a lot of stuff done because it can efficiently duplicate patterns and it never gets tired.
