Nabokov was an immigrant and not a native English speaker: we have that much in common. All of his linguistic choices were careful and deliberate: for him, the dictionary was a gigantic Lego set. πŸ™ƒ I always learn another trick or two whenever I read his stuff...

I've just finished reading Nabokov's "Signs and Symbols" β€” a very short story, but filled with "blink and you'll miss it" implications. An absolute tiny masterpiece, starting with the very first sentence. πŸ’–

"I love short stories because I believe they are the way we live. They are what our friends tell us, in their pain and joy, their passion and rage, their yearning and their cry against injustice." Andre Dubus

It was, it was! :) (I will, of course, post the link if it gets accepted and published.)

Also, if you missed it (or if you're reading this in the unknowable distant future! πŸ™ƒ), here is the thread I posted to show how my drafting process works, day by day, from the skeleton until the final draft. I used this week's big story as an example. :)

Bradbury Challenge, week 40, part 3 πŸ˜€ The main story I worked on this week was my homage to Swords&Planets sci-fi (a la John Carter) for a themed submission call. Never wrote that in subgenre before β€” it was a fun exercise! The end result is 6,266 words long. 🫠 I should hear back within a month. 🀞

And so, aside from teeny-tiny flash stories ( = below 1,000 words), this is what my writing process looks like for *every* story I complete and send out. Tried and true, eh. :) Seems to be working well for me so far, but I'm always to improvement. I hope this was at least a bit helpful. πŸ’“

I don't use beta readers because too many of my friends got burned by friendly-seeming sloppers... I find that (again, thanks to Bradbury) I have a slightly different perspective each morning, a slightly altered view with which to consider the story. There is a reason each story takes a week!

While I was at it, I also simplified a scene where the MC is talking to another important character: less ambiguity, stronger signals. And made a key hint sliiightly more explicit. :)

And this is what my fifth and final draft looks like. :) This final stage consists of reading the whole thing OUT LOUD - literally, no whispering, no cheating. That helps find *a lot* of little bugs, needless repetitions, awkward phrases, etc. I changed just one word on this page. Can you find it? πŸ˜‰

screenshot of a Google Doc:
"β€œRight, got it, playing the game is a bad idea. Good to know. Next question: how the hell can I escape this place?”
β€œYou can’t,” Ognis said.
He didn’t add anything else. He didn’t have to. The silence stretched, forlorn and fatalistic.
The squirrel alien patted my knee with its furry paw.
β€œHere, have a biscuit.”
I accepted the small cookie out of reflex, too shocked to question the wisdom of taking snacks from giant rodents in an alien prison. When I bit into it, the texture was surprisingly soft and chewy, though it tasted like soap. Even so, I devoured it in no time.
On the far side of the room, a heavy door clanged open.
β€œBreak time is over, let’s go!” a guard shouted.
I watched as dozens of aliens lined up single-file. One of them was a levitating octopus. I joined my fellow prisoners and tried not to stare too much.
The four-armed guards β€” still holding their stun batons β€” escorted us through a maze of long hallways until we emerged into a quarry, complete with battered pickaxes and pushcarts. If"
