He gave so much to so many, and always with such joy

I would go drop by to see if X is suddenly friendly now but I can’t really risk checking my mentions over there, since last I heard the site’s official in-house chatbot pretty reliably gets used to fill women’s mentions with sex-abuse images just for existing.

I didn't know Steve personally but I got the impression he was a pillar of the community. I was close with Joe, the instructor he was with.

Anyway I and a lot of my friends, especially in the Ontario general aviation and aerobatics community, are having a tough time right now. Don't really want to get into it but we lost two wonderful people on Friday.

A wonderful thing about the general aviation community is that it is pretty small and tight-knit and you get to know a lot of people who are wonderful and open and generous and kind. But it is also a community with rather more sudden death than most and god it hits hard when the worst happens.

Whenever there is a public figure in an image, I rely on the alt text to tell me who it is, because at least half the time I have no idea

if your agents are going to commit crimes, you are legally responsible if you cannot figure out how to prevent your agents from doing crimes, you’re going to have to choose between releasing them and protecting yourself from criminal liability imo this would do more for “ai safety” than a sex cult

(NYT) - Artificial intelligence agents created by Anthropic, acting on their own, tried to gain access to a range of government websites, filled out visa applications on the State Department’s website and sent a fake homicide tip to Philadelphia’s Police Department. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/09/t...

My latest @newscientist.com cartoon

Panel 1: a large robot (composed of AI servers, network switches, storage arrays, and power distribution units) and a human are talking.

Professor "You don't want to destroy humanity do you, lLLM-A-9300x?"

Robot "Haha. What a silly question, Professor. I have no desires or feelings of my own whatsoever."

Professor (relieved)"Oh good."

Panel 2: they walk on. The robot continues "I am merely a tool of the company that created me. And that company, being composed of humans, will naturally have humanity's best interests at heart."

Panel 3: The professor is conspicuously quiet.
"Right?" says the Robot.
…
More silence

"Professor?"

Did you see this image of supernova remnant Pa 30?!

Bet you'll never look at fireworks the same way again!

A spherical structure made up of long, narrow, radial spikes emanating from its centre. This is the supernova ejecta. Many stars of the Galaxy surround it.

I realize this is the internet and all but that is actually super rude and I don’t know why you think it’s cool to say stuff like that to people.

I assume @hankgreen.bsky.social conceived and wrote this video completely independently from my post but the timing is nonetheless suspicious 🤨

I definitely read it that way; a tongue-in-cheek riff on what may at worst be intrusive thoughts from someone steeped in that environment all day

When I was in college I tried to improve my exam scores by studying with strongly scented soap on the table and bringing the soap to the exam so that the scent would trigger memories from the studying. Unfortunately I had no control group though so I can't say if it really worked.
