I discovered this picture in my medical files. I feel like I'm seeing a preview of the slab I will eventually find myself on.

A senior citizen lies down with his eyes closed, markings in place for a fresh round of biopsies.

May contain graphic violence

Certainly the best use of Russian assets in Europe is to fund Ukraine. Soon Russia abandons its war, the more of its money it keeps ... which is about the only lever they will respond to.

Here's an Elric by Božidar Veselinović, for the interior art of first Serbian editions of the saga in ex-Yu in the late 1970s, published by Prosveta.

Elric protecting Vassliss from Saxif D'aan.

The question is not "why has Donald betrayed Ukraine?" The question is "how big a cut of unfrozen Russian assets will Donald get for betraying Ukraine?"

More evidence that in general, atheists are the among the best people on Earth. A quick shout out to Black Protestants, who also scored amazingly well on this test of basic decency.

Poll showing that only 8% of atheists support Donald Trump. Black Protestants surprisingly fare a little better, with only 7% supporting him.

#WriteStuff I'm on a Widow's Bay Weekend planning committee. We're setting up a huge weekend party in May in Rockport, MA, where part of the show was filmed. I live in Rockport. Season 2 begins filming here in March, 2027. I'm psyched! I haven't been this excited about a TV show since The X-Files.

It is 10 minutes to bedtime hereabouts. I'm in edits for CG. I'll repost tomorrow morning.

Okay, since I've been yammering about my most recent novel and its non-linear timeline and subplots, here you go:

@kww.bsky.socialOct 14, 2026, 1:55 AM

#WriteStuff No link: but this came out of my fingers this weekend. I always write this way -- the first chapter or so, and then sit back and think about whether I should finish it.

#WriteStuff A6 They should generally resolve, but many a sequel has been made by continuing a subplot from the first book.

@kww.bsky.socialOct 14, 2026, 1:38 AM

#Writestuff A5 Yeah, I led the witness there. But for everyone struggling, this is the key. You have supporting characters to interact with your main character and those interactions have to have a foundation. If you can't get that foundation in your main plot, build it with a subplot.

A little bit of recentism here, but I've been impressed by Helene Wecker. For three books she's kept about four parallel plots going and none of them get in the way of the other.

#WriteStuff A3 Because as a practical matter it's nearly impossible to have a single sequential story take 90,000 words and not feel poorly paced.

@kww.bsky.socialOct 14, 2026, 1:14 AM

#WriteStuff Yes ... it's an endemic disease in modern fantasy, especially quest novels. Not every quest member needs a full backstory and motivation -- sometimes they are just bit players.

@kww.bsky.socialOct 14, 2026, 1:07 AM

#WriteStuff A1 Pretty much to completion. Sometimes I'll do an early pacing to make sure I'm not devoting too much weight to side action.

Genuinely, I pity the people who do not realize that they've been brought low. I wish their past selves could see what they've become, and talk some sense into them. "How much would it take," they would ask, "for you to hang out with Nazis who sell kiddie porn?" And they'd be shocked at the answer.
