People really need to fucking re-learn the difference between "I don't like this" and "This is harmful". Not liking a thing is fine, but you don't get to dictate what others enjoy, actually. Especially not within fiction. Be an adult. If you don't like something, move on.

This was done not out of concern for her, but in order to hide the true nature of her abilities. It's bad optics when your kid uses demon magic to tear apart another kid with her own blood. It would be many years until that 'hallucination' was proved to have been a true memory all along.

They were right to do so, as the resulting anger brought her demon to the forefront. The event was swept under the rug, and over the following years, she was gaslit by her father and attendants into believing the whole thing was a hallucination brought on by a fever she contracted around that time.

When she was seven years old, Khamsin killed her only friend, an enslaved boy, in a fit of anger upon losing a footrace.

This made made her realize her achievements and victories all were lies--others were letting her win out of fear--which made her even furious in the moment.

Khamsin spends the first half of the book wearing clothing picked for her--first regal, then a disguise.

But she is not a princess, nor is she a fugitive. That's what others want her to be.

What she is is a proud Zagnati bellatrice, and her true outfit of choice reflects it.

But Khamsin isn't listening. She picks up the helmet, first, runs her fingers over the chitinwork—nothing fine, nothing sanded, only the material's natural lines, hollowed, treated, hardened. The crown of the skewer-moth, a saucer-shaped piece of carapace lined with slits that once housed the creature's many tongues—now an armored sun-hat. The thorax piece of a burrower fashioned into a pauldron, its long wings into a cape. Bracers from the hollowed-out leg segments of a stalk-hound alpha, overlapping vigilant plates in a skirt over the legs, adornments of bone and silk and sinew. A raider's regalia. "It's glorious," Khamsin says.
