everyone is the hero of their own story, same as it ever was

With eyes bigger than its stomach, the heron ended up abandoning its catch, and shaking the carp off its beak. #Sunday #EastCoastKin #ECK

Species: Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias)

A Great Blue Heron stands in shallow, murky green water, its long neck curved sharply downward as it grips a brilliant orange-red goldfish in its pointed beak. The large wading bird has slate-gray feathers, subtle rusty-brown highlights along its wings, and long, slender legs partially submerged in the water.
Its piercing yellow eye is fixed on the fish, which remains partly underwater, its rounded body and flowing fins creating a vivid splash of color against the muted greens and grays of the scene.
Gentle ripples spread across the water, reflecting both predator and prey. The photograph captures an intimate moment in the natural world, emphasizing the contrast between the heron's deliberate, precise movements and the vulnerability of its brightly colored catch.

oh you’re gonna love the dumb bullshit we get to see unfold in 2027

@goose.skiOct 11, 2026, 9:47 PM

specifically i would argue that while most animals are moral patients only humans are moral agents in any meaningful sense

our subjective experience of an ongoing present is a simulation based on delayed sensory information, our brain compensating for that latency through predictive modeling of a future past, man. probabilistic phenomena appear at multiple levels but this is The Big One

Saw a couple of Australasian Swamphens on the way back from the gym, hoping they might hang around the wetlands area for a bit so might head down with my dslr in a bit and try and get a photo of them, because they're pretty striking looking birds. Reference below for those who don't know them

A medium sized wetland bird with long red legs walling through some shallow water. Their plumage is a mix of a deep blue-indigo and black with a red beak and forehead shield.

went to find a source for the quote "the technical is social before it is technical" and i can only find my own posts and blogs where i say "i cannot remember who said this"

this honestly seems like the real strategic value here from ukraine’s point of view. if the bot farm side effect ends up being real and significant it’s a nice knock-on benefit, but it doesn’t have any value in the context of the war itself

I'd be shocked if taking down a couple (large) data centers did much to combat misinfo bots. But if that is, in fact, happening, it's suggestive of very weak anti-bot measures, or that basic counter-measures were abandoned for fancy ML.

@goose.skiOct 11, 2026, 8:46 PM

perhaps this wasn’t an explicit goal, but instead a happy side effect which may influence future targeting decisions?

@goose.skiOct 11, 2026, 8:44 PM

i also don’t think the use of first-person pronouns has any significant role in the anthropomorphization of talking computer

@goose.skiOct 11, 2026, 8:41 PM

fair point also yeah

@goose.skiOct 11, 2026, 8:41 PM

i don’t think that a lack of linguistic idiosyncrasies is a deficit LLMs currently have

FFelienne Hermans@felienne.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 11:02 AM

If we want to regulate AI, why not start with a simple ban on LLMs using "I"? Easy to build, easy to verify and deflates a hype while still allowing people to use chatbots (so no one can claim we are limiting anything) My latest for @volkskrant.nl in English! www.felienne.nl/2026-10-08/#...

i assume someone has had any particular thought i’ve had prior to having had the thought myself yeah

@goose.skiOct 11, 2026, 8:38 PM

but there wasn’t any real way to know that for much of the war, because to know it assumes a level of rationality that was absolutely not present when russia was making its decision to invade
