Snarky history. Hideous French battleships. Nautical nonsense. Always check the alt text.

Sorry, meant to come back on this and say no worries! It's important for me to make the point that I do genuinely need the help sometimes though.

@dreadships.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 6:04 PM

Well yeah, see my second post. But in my case I really struggle to see anything without my lenses in (and glasses don't work), so half the time I really need the alt text!

@dreadships.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 5:56 PM

Please don't be going mad at Steve there, who it turns out was making a poor pedantic joke rather than mocking alt text, but honestly alt text is great. Do more of it.

Also: I don't always know who the hell that is or what's going on even when I have my contacts in, it helps images appear in searches, it can add extra information or context (don't forget the description first!), and occasionally it makes me laugh (I said DESCRIPTION FIRST)

@dreadships.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 5:52 PM

Because I can't always fucking see, numbnuts.

A spiffing brand new mural on a car park wall in Bridlington. I still haven’t found the artists name but they’ve done three similarly splendid paintings around town. Top work.

A mural on the side of a house next to a car park. A painting of ships with sails is on fire as canons are blasted by seafaring sailors. The orange glow of the fire and canon shots contrasts with the blue of a foggy evening and moonlit sky. Blue sky behind the house, cars in the car park. Mundane made beautiful and interesting.

Bow of the Normandie.

the front of a ship, a sailor stood on the pointy bit. It has chimneys and everything

No idea where the fucking typo came from, but if I go quiet it was most likely MI5 intercepting my posts

"King Charles says that he too had been a victim, and was recently scammed into paying several million dollars to somebody claiming to be a British prince,l - who claimed he needed them for 'legal fees'"

BBC Headline - "King warns malicious online actors are evolving tactics". In fairness this is very different to Andrew, who had always been a cunt.

Fun fact: in WW2 so many pilots flew under the Severn Railway Bridge that RAF police were eventually deployed there to take registrations as they went past.

The Severn Railway Bridge near Sharpness, seen at low tide. This may become significant later...

I think something like ten metres at this point. That's a lot less clearance to work with!

Lovely stuff

I do agree, but in the specific case of the ATA I suspect the women were better known, both then and now, than their male counterparts. A lot of them went on to have (or resume) commercial careers. Jackie Moggridge was the first female captain on scheduled passenger services.

Colour photograph - and it is colour, not colourised badly by a shady Facebook account - of ATA pilot Jackie Moggridge at the controls of a single engine aircraft in flying gloves and sunglasses with the canopy back. What I like about this shot is that it's not especially glamorous - this is a young woman doing her job, and you could read so many possible stories into her expression at this moment.

Who was it who arrived at the tower to hear the CO still chewing out his own pilots because she'd absolutely greased the landing? "EVEN SHE CAN BLOODY LAND ONE GENTLY!"

@dreadships.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 6:17 PM

No need to apologise!

@dreadships.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 6:17 PM

"If not duffers won't drown" and all that...

@dreadships.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 6:16 PM

Yeah, it was nasty.

@dreadships.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 6:15 PM

I've already reposted it in an attempt to connect with activity in that sphere - it's a bit late for my meagre knowledge!

@dreadships.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 6:14 PM

The bridge is very much the stand on vessel in this situation
