These are cover images from my three most β€œLiked” puzzles. I’m grateful for this creative outlet, including the fact that our public puzzles often have personal or unarticulated backstories behind them. The fourth picture was an impossibility; grateful there as well. 🧩

I will enjoy reading "is" clues with more wonder in my voice now. Believe it or not, this WP *IS* this DEF! πŸ‘

@tpgrammar.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 8:39 PM

Used in the following way, "defined" would be an example of an adjective link word... i.e., a participle, modifying "magnificence" (grammar A, surface-wise) --> Elaborate Arden rug: magnificence defined (8) But does this clue work cryptogrammatically? (grammar B, cryptic)

@tpgrammar.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 8:18 PM

I am wrong! There are adverbial links. e.g., Do instructional WP "to get" Def In this case, "to get" is an adverbial infinitive answering a "Why?" question [Is there nothing better to do on a late Saturday afternoon?]

@tpgrammar.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 8:13 PM

as links, adverbs are redundant

@tpgrammar.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 8:12 PM

a quick inventory suggests: only verbs, prepositions, and conjunctions can be links Though I've likely overlooked some (obvious?) exceptions

@tpgrammar.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 8:04 PM

: ) "quintessentially"? πŸ˜€

@tpgrammar.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 8:00 PM

Put away the yellow cards... "essentially" as a <--> link word?

Thank you. I'm often wondering about cryptic grammar mechanics of specific clues and don't want to pester the same experts repeatedly. Perhaps a clue-mechanics thread could be opened up (though I can see some down sides there as well, e.g., excessive 'clue-testing'). Potential good convos though.

I tend not to feel competitive when solving, so looking things up doesn't bother me - I'm usually satisfied to say 'I see how it works and likely have the parse but not the specifics.' If I were more of a completionist though, the UK divide would probably be more frustrating. Currently, I enjoy it.

I enjoyed solving Dice's latest Quick cryptic, this time with the record button pressed.

Thanks for the fun, @guineverecryptic.bsky.social

It’s a test!

40 4-worders with no exceptions is quite the accomplishment! Looking forward to having a go this weekend.
