Ok: here’s higher quality content: Lichfield Cathedral, about half an hour ago. I also saw one of the peregrines, but I didn’t manage to get them in shot.

A sandstone cathedral at twilight. It has three spires, which is pretty unusual.

The 2016 Brexit vote was targeted by Russian “state-sponsored interference”, Andy Burnham has said, as he warned voters in France and Germany about Kremlin-backed attempts to influence their countries’ politics.

In many ways, is the Drama not a reimagining of Carrie for Millennials?

@stephenkb.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 4:43 PM

Right, the paradox of a modern Carrie is she would just suffer unnoticed in home education, but the teachers would flag it.

@stephenkb.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 4:27 PM

Would refine this: when they notice, they don’t care!

@stephenkb.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 4:18 PM

I think @figgityfigs.bsky.social makes a good point about the US context of “decades of school shooting” but that is not an aspect that had properly occurred to me until they pointed it out.

@stephenkb.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 4:08 PM

I wasn’t making a comment on what Flanagan has done with the text either way. (He has in my view gone for a complete adaptation, I think its problems are about the length and open endeness rather than the specific choices)

This is part of why I don’t instinctively have the problem so many others seem to with doing a lot more *adaptation* to it than the de Palma version did. Bringing this particular story into the present is more than giving everyone cell phones and making the bucket drop with an Arduino.

@stephenkb.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 4:03 PM

Completely agree. You have to properly adapt it if you want to set it in the present.

@stephenkb.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 3:52 PM

But that doesn't make 'safeguarding, social services and anti-bullying policies' about 'teenage girl social mores'. Have you read 'Carrie'?

@stephenkb.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 3:49 PM

Yeah, the weird paradox is that 'the teachers would notice' has mostly been replaced with 'but social services and the neighbours wouldn't'.

@stephenkb.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 3:49 PM

Agree.

@stephenkb.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 3:48 PM

'Teenage girl social mores' have nothing to do with it and Martin is in his 20s.

@stephenkb.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 3:19 PM

The horrific stories are about people noticing things, ultimately. Whereas the whole point of Carrie is nobody really does.

@stephenkb.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 3:03 PM

You're both missing specific context, the horrific stories you describe are actually evidence *against* your point in any case.

Suddenly imagined a Princess-Bride-esque modern frame to the period piece with teen incredulous at how no-one intervened. (That said, my teen finds a lot of US school movies bizarre, for the exact same reason.)

@stephenkb.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 2:17 PM

You could tell a good story that was heavily inspired by asking yourself what would happen if the story of Carrie collided with modern standards of safeguarding, social services and anti-bullying policies, to name but a few reasons why the original story is now best told as a period piece.

@stephenkb.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 2:12 PM

This is 100 per cent correct in my view. Carrie is, as someone on here put it, ultimately a tragedy based on 'what if, on the absolute worst moment of the worst day of your awful life, someone handed you a fully loaded gun?' and for various reasons the crescendo leading up to that doesn't work now.
