For what it’s worth, I don’t use AI in any of my projects and I’m not planning to change that. I’ve added a prominent corner-flash popup about this to all my project homepages.

I’m pretty sure there is room for both AI and AI-free content out there. But for me… I handcraft. ✍️

Well there’s your problem right there, if it’s known they’re slop coded but still being covered then the authors are getting what they want

I also tested my new game on my +2

A computer screen displays a retro-style text-based game interface, showing character stats and a game scenario. Various cluttered items, including papers and electronic devices, are visible on the desk beneath the monitor.

I finally fixed the 3DO signing stuff … now I just need to work out exactly what I changed that worked

It all depends on how poor, if it’s all an unoptimised pile of cack then yes, even just decompiling it and recompiling with newer tools would do something and yes, replacing drawing routines with faster ones can work - but there’s always a limit

@onlyretrofans.comOct 10, 2026, 9:41 PM

It’s not easy, but it’s the kind of artless task LLMs are good at

@onlyretrofans.comOct 10, 2026, 9:40 PM

Yeah, it’ll decompile the Z80 code, that’s a constant and there are tools to do that, then it just needs to extract the graphics - again there are tools. Once it has the assembler it just needs to fix the drawing, sound and input hooks

ok, maybe I have two speccy games on the go. I stupidly decided to experiment with something after uploading the new Amstrad Quantum Hop build and it went far faster than I expected

The +2B is back after a summer break, and we're focusing in on #ZXSpectrum arcade action games!

I’d forgotten how slow ZCC was

@onlyretrofans.comOct 10, 2026, 1:25 PM

It's such a weird game, it just feels like the devs, writers, artists and actors had a blast

I've spent the morning working on the Amstrad port of Quantum Hop, seeing as it took off a lot faster than I expected. It was a bit of a quick port from the Speccy version. I redid most of the graphics and sound but it was a little flickery - so i'm working on that

Cue the “whaa, some people shouldn’t be in F1 whaa” commenters, because they have no concept of how #F1 works and just know they like THIS driver but hate THAT driver. I don’t like the drive to survive generation.

With that said, the move wasn’t worth it - but drivers don’t have an off button

@onlyretrofans.comOct 9, 2026, 11:54 PM

But anyhoo. I have a couple of new games on the go, Herexis on the PC and GrimHaven on the Speccy. But then I intend to go through each part-finished port and get them to a releasable state. Very few people will care, but I will have that small thrill that makes it worthwhile

@onlyretrofans.comOct 9, 2026, 11:54 PM

Compare that to the Amstrad CPC, where there is sort of some support, Z88dk kind of supports it, CPCtelura expands on that, but it's an absolute pain to get it running on the Mac and the docs and examples aren't great. And don't get me started on Plus/GX4000 - I ended up making my own SDK for that

@onlyretrofans.comOct 9, 2026, 11:54 PM

Getting toolchains working, finding decent documentation, finding working examples. None of it's a given, especially if you stray beyond the more popular platforms. Like the Speccy is very well supported, beyond the technical difficulties that was an easy port, z88dk is a bit of a dream

@onlyretrofans.comOct 9, 2026, 11:54 PM

I got really burned out by Jurl and I can see why, I started so many ports because it was always a thrill to see the same mechanics and (largely) the same visuals repeated on different platforms. But each time I forgot about the sheer amount of work it took just to start.

@onlyretrofans.comOct 9, 2026, 11:31 PM

Ah, the "why the hell do I do this?" triggers. If it's not people stealing my games because charging £1 is profiteering, or telling me my game is shit because game Y looks so much better, it's the new hotness, commenting that it's obvious I didn't use AI because it looks too shit.

@onlyretrofans.comOct 9, 2026, 11:09 PM

How much money is whatnot throwing around? The people they sponsor seem to find a reason to mention them in every video - to the point where it can’t be just accidental
