The Doo-Wop Evangelist strikes again
(Don’t worry, the Halloween episode is going to be a fun one).
Going to have to pull out a lot more cheerful festive tunes for this year’s Snakes and Roundabouts Xmas show, cos so far the list is mostly Christmas Eve At The Saddest Honky Tonk In The World.
Bill Carlisle - When Snowflakes Fall
Not hungover enough to have a headache or feel sick. But hungover enough to be eating cold leftover pizza and getting slightly emotional about (music adjacent to) doo-wop.
Billy Storm - When You Dance
Few promising sounding titles that aren’t on YouTube, and also not for sale on Discogs/ebay that I’m annoyed about, too. But you never know - after finding that stupidly rare Christmas blues 45 last month, anything’s possible.
Actually…more like 300. And I haven’t finished the preliminary online digging. I bring this madness upon myself, but I firmly believe that the people deserve the best Christmas radio I can possibly put together, if only to counteract the generic festive slop we’ll all be dealing with from Nov. on.
Ooh, thanks - saved for later cos I got tacos to make
Before I get too caught up in the Christmas show prep, a true Halloween all-timer.
The Re-Vels - Dead Man’s Stroll (aka Midnight Stroll)
Make that nearly 250. Most of which will probably turn out to be twee shite - I better be on Be Bop Santa Claus’s nice list after this.
I was thinking laudanum.
I also purchased some children’s Halloween socks. They fit me better than any of my so-called adult sized socks.
I do, man. I really do.
Piano Red and The Meter-Tones - I Feel Good
I saw the hottest man I’ve ever witnessed in an Asda (any Asda) last night, and I hope this is a safe forum to confess how embarrassed I was to be a) there with me Ma, and b) the person who just replied to said Ma’s ‘do you need anything down here?’ with ‘Yes - MEAT’.
Sounds like a great music teacher - so many seem to associate doo-wop with just ballads, and the ones by the most generic white groups at that. One day I’ll own all of them in their original form, not just in on compilations/reissues…one day. Possibly when I marry a really old guy for his records.
Fuckin’ LET’S.
Nickie Lee - Rock And Roll The Blues
Does exactly what it says on the tin.
The hucklebuckest hucklebucker that you ever seen in yo’ hucklebuckin’ life…
Johnny Otis Orchestra (Redd Lyte vocal)
Still one of, if not my absolute favourite rockabilly records. Fuckin’ WILD, daddy!
The Nightriders feat. Mel Smith - Pretty Plaid Skirt (And Long Black Sox)
I said it once before, but it really did bear repeating.
Fuckin’ love this song. If I did Top Whatevers of music, it’d be on there, but there are too many great songs and I refuse to mangle my brain trying.
I do care about other things than hair in a romantic partner, but hey, hair’s important. Don’t dismiss my culture.
